Need bigger fuel tank in my X!

Hey guys. Last night I was dinking around in the garage and a thought popped into my head. What about adding a Regular Cab fuel tank to an X to give it another 20+ gallons of capacity? Anyone looked into this? From what I remember on my '01 f250, the tank would be right under the second row drivers side door? I know some of you are thinking "You already have 44 gallons, isn't that enough?" Sure it is, but I would really like to fill up with ~70gallons of fuel. I hate fueling. If I could go 1.5-2 months w/o filling that would be great. What about having to make 3 charges at the Pay-at-the-Pump when a fill up would cost ~$150! Now we are talkin.

Re: Need bigger fuel tank in my X!

Wow, 1.5 - 2 months on 70 gallons. I can usually only go two weeks on my 46 (2 in the neck) gallons.

I would like to know if this is possible to do a WVO conversion.

Re: Need bigger fuel tank in my X!

I looked to do just that, examined both tanks during prepump & intank mods. The F250 tank rises up (is taller) where the Pickup box is. The excursion doesn't have a pickup box & therefore the tank wouldn't work very well. I have been looking at different Frame mounted tanks & may just end up making one (WVO Tank).

I harpooned the F250 29 gallon Tank & it now holds 34 gallons. Left 1" of vent tube.
I harpooned the X 44 gallon Tank & it now holds 50 Gallons. The X Tank has a very short vent tube, but tank has enough air ballast room for fuel expansion with Vent tube cut off flush.

Keep us informed if you find any tanks that would work.

Well, if it were an ideal 1.5 - 2 months! My last 2 fill ups were spaced at 30 and 31 days putting roughly 40 gallons in both times. But in those 2 months I pretty much just commuted to work and and a couple of errands. I usually shoot for 3 weeks between fill ups. But the 1.5 - 2 month claim may help me with the pitch to wifey, so who knows it may climb to 2 - 2.5 months at some point !

Re: Need bigger fuel tank in my X!

"Harpoon the tank"

Fuel tank has two hoses for filling, Large fill hose & vent hose to allow air in tank to escape while filling. The vent tube/hose sticks into top of fuel tank and retains an air space for expansion. Our tanks are used in gasoline applications too. Gasoline expands more than diesel. When you fill your stock tank, the vent hose determines how full it can be filled. Once the fuel nozzle shuts off automatically, you can slowly add a few more gallons with patience to top off tank for maximum driving range. If you cut the vent on the inside of the tank shorter, then tank with fill higher in the tank & hold more fuel with a smaller expansion space. Tank will fill right to the top and nozzle will click off and your done. Much faster fill-ups.

In pickups, the vent is 5 inches long / down into tank, cut off 4" leave 1". In the X the vent is 2 inches long / down into the tank. I cut mine off flush in the X tank (removed 2") because tank has air space designed into tank higher than the vent. Tanks now hold more fuel.

If you rig is a 2003 or older diesel, then you want to do prepump / intank mods too! Harpoon mod is easier on pickup trucks & more worth while due to smaller tank size.

Turbodave, Sevierville,TN is a beautiful area to visit & live!
