This is my first post on TheDieselStop.Com, but I've been an avid reader of everyone else's posts for a few months now. I am looking for some advice from other Excursion owners re: a situation I've gotten myself into.
I bought a new Expedition back in 2001, but it got totaled last November. One good thing that came of my misfortune (aside from surviving the accident) was that I was able to move up to a new Excursion. Since the wife and I are also eager to start camping (we'll be buying a 32' travel trailer later this year), I decided to go for the PSD instead of the V10. Unfortunately, after deciding on a loaded '02 Limited, now the new '03 6.0's have started hitting dealer lots. Herein lies my delima. I'm looking on keeping my X for the long haul, but I've read about so many issues with the 7.3 PSD X(fuel system, cackle, transmission, brakes, voided warranties, etc.) that I'm wondering if it would be better to take a $5-7K loss and trade up to a new 6.0 Eddie Bauer now. I know that the 6.0 is still a new and unproven animal, but assuming that the X could be manufacturer discontinued at any time within the next year, am I better off to take the plunge now or wait and hope I can find a quality used one after Ford stops making them. Of course, the whole idea will backfire if I can't get a good price for my '02. With the continuation of Ford's no/low interest rates, I may have a hard time getting rid of the one I already have. What would you do if you were in my shoes?
Definitely tough shoes to be in. I was looking to trade-in my Suburban back in October while my wife and I were traveling cross-county with our 31ft. travel trailer. While in Las Vegas I found a 2003 Excursion EB with the 7.3PSD and the price was right. I new the new PSD was coming and I could not decide which to buy (new or proven). I was assured by the dealer that the 6.0 would not have any incentives for a while. I decided to take the afternoon to think about it....when I returned to the dealership to accept their offer, someone else had bought the truck. I figured it was a sign from GOD that I was to have the new diesel My Excursion Limited 6.0PSD is on order.
If I were in your shoes I'd probably hold on to what I have and try to pick up a used one down the road. Selling a fairly new truck can be disasterous to your checkbook! Good luck.

I don't think there's any major reason to go for the 6.0 vs. the 7.3. Each has their potential defects. I'd love to have a 6.0 to play with, (I'm a technology freak) but I doubt if I'll get rid of my current beast before I put 100k on it. The looming "end of the line" for the Excursion is the only real reason I can come up with to trade, because I really like the vehicle and won't be able to replace it. I guess if I was you I'd try to sell your vehicle outright and see if you can avoid the major bath you'd take at trade-in and then if you got what you needed out of it turn around and buy a new one.
Just my .02
Regards,
Dave

Welcome to the TDS XE
The wife and I have already talked over about getting a new 03 6.0 and taking into account we just got our 02 7.3 last June ,well we'd take a bath on a trade as Dave mentions.
This is our second 7.3 and have been very satisfied with it's performance and zero repair calls going into the 4th year of owning a 7.3
If we do get a 6.0 it'll be a crew cab short bed and I'll put a Glastite 2000 top on it as it'll be our secondary vehicle to the X.

I would keep the 02. There is not enough of an advantage to go to the 6.0. A few hundred dollars will get you the same power and the price and incentives on the 7.3 cut the price of the engine in half. There will always be a bigger and better Diesel, they will get bigger and better each year and trying to keep up with that would be like keeping up in the electronics field. The 7.3 is great if you treat it right so I never listen much to what happens to others unless it happens to everyone, I treat mine like a child so it should fine. Plus now you can spend the money saved on the loss on aftermarked mods that will be better than any new 6.0.

I think the cackle problems etc. are a little blown out of proportion on this site. This site is full of people seeking perfection(which is not bad), but I think the posting on here is mostly of fixes, not praise of how great the 7.3 is and what it's track record is. Sure some trannies go out, and some make a lot more noise idling than others, but how many do you see on the road with 100-200-300K on them
