New Bilsteins

Just ordered 4 Bilsteins for my X. Anyone have advice on how best to install or a link to previous thread on subject? I've got an '01 4x4.

Re: New Bilsteins

Also have '01 4WD PSD Ex with Bilsteins. Easy to install. Just make sure you got the right ones before installing. The wrong model is horrible. Right ones are great. Post your part numbers.

Re: New Bilsteins

I think those are the yellow HD ones , if so don't use them unless ya like a stiffer ride. For a softer ride get the ones valved for a soft ride, Edge used to use Bilsteins in their kit...don't know the #. Check with a Edge vendor or you could get the new Edge Signature's shocks.

Re: New Bilsteins

The part numbers you posted are the ones you want for a 4WD. They have almost no compression damping and the right rebound. I don't think there is anything better for a standard ride height Ex. If you are planning to lift from stock (ie. more than 2"), you will need different (longer) shocks.

Also, handling big load variations is better done with springs and/or airbags than adjustable shocks. When you have the right amount of "spring" for the load of the moment, the above Bilsteins always provide the right damping. Jacking up the compression damping to handle a big load just is not the best way to do that.

Re: New Bilsteins

i got part #s for my X which i thought were the adjustable type, but they were not when i looked up application, i have a 2000 X 4X4 with about 3 inches lift front and rear,

i heard to use stock type F350 shocks in rear and 4 inch lift shocks in front,

is this correct and does anyone have the correct #'s for the adjustable shocks....

#'s i had were be5-62445-h5 and be5-6249-h5,

but these show not to be the adjustable shocks that i wanted

thanks

Re: New Bilsteins

I've had those same Bilstein's on my X for a long time now and love them. Ride is much better and more controlled especially when towing heavy. I simply bolted them right on using common wrenches in my garage. I did't even lift the X. I did use a staight drive and extension to reach up for the bolts in the two rears. It was pretty darn easy! Check out my pics. to see mine! Good Luck.

Glennz, those are the 5100/5125 series silver shocks they are NOT adjustable. I have that same rear #BE5-6249-H5 and for the front I have #BE5-A463-H5 that are for the X-codes.

Re: New Bilsteins

i have heard the bilstein non adjustable are not as good as a ride for lifted x"s, am looking for numbers for the adjustable bilsteins, that way i can put it on setting 1 while driving to florida so my wife stops complaining about ride, presently i have the es3000 procomps and rough ride, have seen the rancho 9000 that are adjustable, do bilseitn make an adjustable, which are better the bilsetin adjustables or the ranchos

edunn...so i am assuming you have the listed part #'s that are not adjustable, and i see that you have the X code springs also, only dif is i have the add-leaf front, just want to make sure that i do not get the same ride quaility with the non adjustable bilstein or ranchos as i do with the pro-comps

thanks

Re: New Bilsteins

Thanks for the post. I took the advice and ordered the two sets myself. Will install them soon and see if the X-beast rides any better. Have about 56000 MI on the 2001 Excursion 7.3 4x4 right now. Soon the extended warrantee will be over. Never used it so far- was kind if a waste. But I mostly bought it due to the 4R100 transmission reputation.

Re: New Bilsteins

Salem,

If you have the original OEM shocks in there with 56K on them, you are riding an 8000 lb.pogo stick. You will be thrilled with the 6208/6209 Bilsteins as long as you stay within 2" of stock ride height. What's interesting is that the stock shocks are very similar to the Bilsteins up to about 12K-15K miles when the Ford shocks croak. (I bought my 2001 4WD PSD with only 11K miles on it. I had previously driven several used ones with 30K plus on them and they all had no rebound damping (horrible). I was really surprised when I drove mine for the first time how good it was. I still immediately replaced the shocks with Bilsteins upon purchase, but they were only slightly different, having a tad more rebound. The difference is they stay the same for 80K miles or more and if they degrade, you get new ones free.

BTW, there is no reason to go to high end adjustable Bilsteins on a stock ride height "street" Ex. Spring changes, Landyots and rear air bags for extra load capacity are the way to go. The 6208/09 Bilsteins work perfectly in all situations in concert with the above. No shock adjustments are needed. If you plan a major lift, huge wheels and tires and so forth, then you may need trick shocks with external cannisters etc.
