New Emissions on Diesels

Man am I glad I have an 03 7.3. This was a Dec build and I could have had the 6.0 but did not want to be a ginny pig, now I see all the power choking crap put on the new Diesels and I am so glad I have the 7.3. I read in Diesel Power mag all the emissions from EGRs to Diesel Particulate Filters, and the reburn exhaust tips. Heck, mine does not even have a catalytic egg burner. This looks like a keeper, no way I am going to trade it for these nightmares. I sure hope they do something about the exhaust tips, they look like something from Back to the Future. This and the converters that are the diameter of a watermelon, sticking below the frame rails, just waiting to be torn off at $1000 a pop. Sooooo....let them choke to death, I will keep the 7.3 and never look back. Plus, with 146,000 miles I have had -0- problems. You know this was one of the last motors off the line so it has every possible update, they even bumped the power to match the SD PUs so it is a win win all the way around. As far as I am concerned this makes my truck worth more, not that I would ever sell it, but it is the last of the big displacement, no smog choking, no emissions garbage Diesels.

Re: New Emissions on Diesels

Does anyone know when Ford upped the hP of the 03's to match the pickups?

How would I be able to tell if my Sept 02 built 2003 7.3L had more HP/TQ?
Just curious.
Thanks,

Re: New Emissions on Diesels

Good question, I am not sure myself but I read where the 03's got this bump. I had no idea there was even a difference, I mean why would you do that, it seems like more work to mess with a motor on such a limited build.

Re: New Emissions on Diesels

From what i know having owned a bunch of 7.3's (6 in total) is that in 99 and 2000 they had 215 hp and 400 something tq in 01 they raised the hp up to 225 and tq to 505 in the auto trans and the 6spd were 250 hp and 515 tq inearly02 they did 250 and 515 auto and 6spd was 275 and 515 after that till the end they made all the auto and 6spd them same at 275 and 525. when i replaced the engine in my 99 pick up with the 6spd my friend who is a tech at my local ford dealer went thru all the specs with me when we ordered my new engine and i went with the 275/525 engine and he re flashed my 02 X to the latest program so it is the same as well. other than the early 99 engines the power came mostly from progaming the early 99's had differt air boxes, turbos and cross over pipes for the turbos. i had updated my pick up to the newer specs for the added power. Once the engine blew due to a irresponsible employee( which was fired due too this fact)I had a choice and went with the 03 program as well as engine set up instead of pulling everything i had put on the first engine on to another 99 setup. This was much more econamical the parting the older engine for the newer one. Hope this helps you and sorry for the rambling on.

Dave

So besides software, what was the hardware that made the engine have a higher hp and torque numbers?

Re: New Emissions on Diesels

Wow, 215 to 275hp, that is some righteous HP I am glad I waited. I can see now that it was not so much internals as programing, that makes sense, I mean really, how could they make different internals and keep them apart, not to mention the special parts for the Excursion over the PU if in fact they did use different parts, that would be a nightmare to juggle, plus the spare parts would be scarce as the X is no where near to build numbers as the SD PU so the spare parts would also be limited. I added an Edge programmer which is mild at 60 hp, 90 ftlbs torque, it makes a difference on pulling a trailer up hills, it just keeps pulling without down shifting. Plus now when I give it a good jab it blows a nice black cloud.

Re: New Emissions on Diesels

Ford basiclly did the same thing we do by adding our power programs. As for the hardware they changed from the early 99's was the turbo, crossover pipes that feed the turbo, and the air boxes. I had an early 99 van with the 7.3 in it, when the cpu crapped out they ordered a new one and got the one for late 99 and 2000, they sent it back because with that one the truck wouln't run. When they sent it back they got the older version and told us that since it was a early model a re flash wouldn't fix the problem because the truck had the wrong turbo and some other parts I don't remeber that were not on the later models. This was also true of my pick up, that is why when my friend changed his tutbo and injectors to mini me's and a BB turbo i had that stuff put on my pick up so i could have it reflashed to the newer program. The injectors had nothing to do with the power his had only 20,000 miles or so and my had over 125,000 and his turbo was a brand new one he had warrantied because he blew it up. all the pipes and stuff my friend the tech got for me at his cost and did the whole job thru the shop.Sorry about rambling on again.

Re: New Emissions on Diesels

So, if we have a older 7.3 (let's say 2000 because we're really talking about me) and get an 80hp chip, does that add 80 hp to my stock hp (which I THINK is 235) for a total of 325, or does it pump my 7.3 80hp over the higher rated stock 7.3's for a total of 365? As I understand chips, they ... wait a second, I really don't understant chips. Do they add to the exsisting computer, or basically replace the exsisting computer brain.

(Hope I'm smart enought to understand the answer).

Re: New Emissions on Diesels

Your increase would be over the existing hp/tq. Most chips just add fuel and maybe advance timing to get the power, thats why you get the big black smoke cloud, it is unburnt fuel, kind of like Diesels used to be before the turbo came along, it added the air needed to burn the fuel so when you chip it you should also add a new turbo and exhaust to burn this extra fuel and expend it and a new air intake, then you really get the full advantage of the chip. For most the exhaust and air intake (K&N) is enough to make the system work.
