new excursion

Just joined the ex club with an 04 6.0 to replace my 99 Suburban 6.5. Love the Ford so far and there's really no comparison to the Chevy. My first question: How do you tell when the truck was built? Is it the date at the bottom of the window sticker, or something else?

No. The date on the sticker is the date the sticker was printed. You need to have your dealer run an OASIS check on the Ford computer. It will tell you the exact build date.

Maybe someone on this board with OASIS access will run it for you.

Re: new excursion

Generally engines are built within a week to 10 days of the truck. If you look at the drivers side valve cover at the rear you will see a build date for the engine. May need a flash light and you need to be standing near the widshield. Other than this as already stated OASIS is the source. When you have service work done, the invoice picks the build date from OASIS, I believe. On the top right of MY invoice there is a box "Vehicle Information" that includes:
Inservice date
Production date
Sold date

And since no one else said it, Welcome to the Site!!

As dfor an OASIS, your dealer may run one for you without any problem, or you cna try the "Ordering Information" forum sonce a coupld of dealers post there and do run them for TDS members sometimes.

And I'll start with a tip. I don't remember who posted this as a "first Excursion" tip but I think it was OT, if you don't plan to use the luggage rack, remove the cross bars now! I checked mine and they were right, the bars rest directly on the paint so dust and dirt could soon aid in sanding paint off the roof in those spots.

Re: new excursion

Welcome to the site. Please don't panic with the amount of negativity you will read on this site. There is a lot of good info here and a bunch of guys that will help you with what ever questions you might have. FamilyRide is correct about the roof rack. I took mine off and bought a Thule rack.

Re: new excursion

And a big congrats on the new Excursion and what an upgrade from a Suburban

Indeed pull the roof bars off as FR mentioned.

I thought I had read sometime back that the roof bars can be re-arched to provide abit more paint surface to bar spacing, anyone save those threads?

Again,Welcome to the Excursion Group!!!

Re: new excursion

Thanks for the responses folks. Each day I like the X more and more. Already learned something, too, on the roof rack tip - how right you are.

Re: new excursion

Folks,

We couldn't be happier with our 2002 diesel Ford Excursion. We've had it for about eighteen months and its been a real gem. I do have two questions that I hope someone may be able to address.

1) We recently had a "quick lube" place that changes our oil replace the fuel filter. Immediately, perhaps unrelated but talk about a coincidence - our fuel gage stays stuck on full. I've just learned how to get to the HEC dealer test via the trip/odometer but don't know how to translate the codes that I found. Does anyone have a suggestion on the gage, perhaps a source for the codes, etc.? I'll probably swing into AutoZone tomorrow and ask them to dump the computer codes, but since you folks appear to be knowledgeable I wanted to shop it by you.

2) Considering we don't know how we could do with a smaller vehicle, and since the Suburban doesn't offer a diesel engine, we were terribly disappointed to hear that Ford plans to discontinue the Excursion after the 2004 model year. I wrote to Ford and got a call back, but they would not confirm the news accounts I had seen. Can anyone shed any light on this matter? We'd really like to keep buying diesel Excursions from now on, probably every four or five years, but...

Thanks all,

Phil

Re: new excursion

Phillip, welcome to the site!

The Excursion's life expectancy has been a huge topic. Do a search and you'll find the history of all the rumors and confirmed Ford announcments to follow the history.

The latest is the 2005 model year which could actually continue into the early part of the 2006 model year. Ford is selling just enough to keep them happy. Supposedly the 2005 DOES get some of the minor changes the SD is getting including the possibility of front coils vs. leaf springs. Only time will tell..... Re: New Xcursion

ctcraig -

Congratulations and welcome to the site. I've only had my "X" about two months and there are alot of us at different points on the learning curve.

It sounds like a minor suggestion, however, it's definitely worth removing the roof racks now if you haven't already.

BTW, I might also suggest that you go to My Home > Personal Information > Signature and add the description of your vehicle. It'll tell everyone instanteously what your driving when you Post a question and it'll save you from typing it everytime.

Good luck.

Good suggestion on pulling the roof racks. I'll do that this weekend.

Just try and lift somewhat on the bars so they don't slide on the paint surface when removing em,just a tip

Re: New Xcursion

All,

I don't want to hijack this thread, so my apology for not staying on topic. I've not gotten too familiar with how the site works yet, but I did want to quickly say thanks for the replies. I travel so this was my first chance to check back and I appreciate the responses. After making the post I actually did do some further research and came up with the welcome news that Ford is apparently going to keep making them...for now.

If I may right quick - I have looked high and low for a book for my 2002 4X4 diesel Excursion and apparently nobody on the aftermarket is making one yet? I think there is a good chance that my fuel tank float is stuck at full/at the top. Can anyone succinctly tell me how to get access to the float/top of the tank so that I can tap on it to see if I can jar it loose?

Thanks in advance,

Phil
