My fire department just picked up a new, 2001 Excursion w/Power Stroke -- beautiful vehicle. It was suppose to be ordered with the 47A Ambulance Prep package -- or at least the equivalent in options. When it arrived, it has only one alternator and no idle control (who knows what else it may be missing). The dealer tried to tell us that this is a new alternator and you don't have to have two. I told him that this new alternator certainly looked like the 90 amp -- maybe as high as a 110 amp -- that came with every truck (just like my '99). The idle control is essential as we will have a ton of emergency lights on this beast.
Can you buy the dual alternators and idle control on the Excursion? I can't imagine why you couldn't. Can they be added by the dealer?

Not as a factory option, because there wouldn't be enough demand to justify another option. You can't even order the AIC in a PSD pickup with the Lariat trim - because they didn't sell enough of them in the '99 and '00 models to justify having the option on the assembly line - even though the AIC simply plugs in to a PSD pickup, even a Lariat.
But you can order the AIC from the dealer's parts department, and just plug it in on a PSD Lariat pickup.
The Ambulance Prep Pkg (47A) is available on F-350, F-450, and F-550 chassis cabs only - not on pickups and Excursions.

Yes.
The AIC is relatively simple to install on an Excursion. There is no plug in the wiring harness, but the wires are all there, so you just have to know which wires to splice into. Instructions are in the Excursion forum on this website.
When you raise the hood on a PSD Excursion and on an F-250 PSD, they are almost identical. So since the dual altenators are optional on the F-250 PSD, then they can be added to the Excursion by a competent tech. But that might get to be a pretty expensive job, depending on how much change to the wiring harness would be required.
If your fire department plans to run lots of lights while idling at a fire site, then you definitely need the AIC. Turn on charge protect, and the single altenator can run a lot of lights for a long time. I doubt you'd really have to have the dual altenators if you have the AIC and use it properly.

I special-ordered it new and plan to drive it until it quits.
I have got a summary index post of info about idle control on Excursions, from jbkrab, Excursion7.3PSD, HeliPilot, SmokeyWren, Cas and others http://forums.ford-diesel.com:8080/u...ML/000501.html
hope it is helpful, still would like the partnumber of the connectors, so you don't have to hardwire.
