New Excursion powerstroke owner looking for advice

I am a new proud owner of a 2000 X limited, 4x4, Powerstroke. Are there any issues (frequent problems) I need to know about with it mechanically? Also, what is a good way to get more power without voiding the remaining warranty. I had a 1999 F-250 superduty powerstroke, but the X just does not have the same get up and go, especially when the turbo spools up. How do these babys tow?

Re: New Excursion powerstroke owner looking for advice

Welcome to the Excursion world. You will love the truck. I have just turned 50k with minor problems. Some oil leaking from various engine parts seems to be my biggest problem (all under 100k warranty though). I did just have a rear U joint go out (blamed on not enough grease from factory) Aside from that it has been a sound truck. I have towed a few times with it (heaviest was a Land Rover on a U-Haul trailer) and it is a breeze!

I have the Walker stright through exhaust and the K&N air filter. Those helped the get up some, but I have been told many times the best way to make this truck move (besides a chip) is the get the 4" exhaust system with a 3 1/2 or 4" downpipe. No one seems to know why the X is sluggish compaired to the Super Duty. I would venure it has something to do with weight.

Good luck with the beast. We still get looks from other "Little" SUV drivers!

Matt

Mine is a 4x2 and other than the air box and wiper recall, I just drive and keep serviced. I tow a 24" 4000# travel trailer with ease. Love the beast. Cruise control 70 mph in overdrive. I average 14 towing, around 14 in town and 20 on highway not towing. Sure beats the suburban I got rid of. Been to Big Bend and Colorado from Houston pulling trailer. I have guages and B&B 50 chip with K&N filter.

Re: New Excursion powerstroke owner looking for advice

I cleaned the engine today and noticed old caked oil (moist) all over the drive belt. There seemed to be oil on the fan blades too. I suspect the front main seal. Since there is oil around the pulley. You mention you had various oil leaks. What was leaking and did they fix it right and how long did it take for them to fix it? Thanks.

Re: New Excursion powerstroke owner looking for advice

I have installed the Therminator from Diesel Dynamics - it made a big difference - snappy throttle and better mileage. I don't tow much, but I have pulled another truck on a trailer, and could have pulled the trailer out from under the truck! My buddy has the same installation on his Superduty, and it seems that my X feels lighter and has more pep that the SD - not normal given the weight difference (I believe I outweigh him by 1000 pounds) - he drove my X and said he wished his truck was as responsive as mine - he makes up for it with propane now...... I don't have any bad things to say about the Therminator except the price - it isn't the most powerful mod you can do, but it is the safest and allows you to go without the gauges if you don't want them since it monitors EGT itself - lets you allow the boss to drive it without worry. Do go with a larger exhaust - makes things cooler. I have the KNN air filter - you decide that one after you read up on the problems involved with it - I like mine and it makes enough difference to make it worth the price. Take care of the transmission with at least a sonnax and tricumulator - I also went with Amsoil in the motor and transmission. Only you know how much playing around you want to do with your new baby, but you will find a whole host of things to monitor and modify and tinker with - just watch this site - if it can be done, you will read about it here. Have fun, and ask questions.....

Re: New Excursion powerstroke owner looking for advice

The best advice I could give you is to get on the phone ASAP and get yourself a SCMT. No other piece of add on equipment is gonna put this big of a smile on your face after only 10 minutes of work. The only way to describe this thing is "AWESOME". I like the darn thing so much I bought one for my brother. One of the members has found a really good source for us on the SCMT. I got the second one from Dave at ProPower.

Here is some of his email to me:
I agreed to provide members of the www.ford-diesel.com website some of these units for $305.00 plus $10.00 s&h in the 48 states. I will do it until Superchips makes me stop. They think I am letting them go way too cheap. I give a 30 day "customer satisfaction" guarrantee and they have a lifetime warranty from Superchips. I ship all orders within one working day of receipt of payment.

Here is a link to his place: 954-491-6988 M-F 10am-6pm EST www.propowerparts.com ... Really nice folks who think the Ford-Diesel.com folks are worth a little something extra. Like I said before the only to describe this thing is AWESOME!

The best thing I could tell you is the sooner you order a SCMT
