I've put down a little deposit to hold an '05 Excursion which is on it's way to the dealer. This one has the 16" wheels and I'd really prefer the 18". I'm thinking it would just be a matter of changing the wheels and tires - am I correct?
This is a 6.0 PSD w/ 4x4. My wife will be driving it mostly to take the kids to school, piano lessons, scouts, etc. - roughly 370 miles per week and about 60% city (hurry up and wait) and 40% highway. We try to drive to Orlando about once a month and it's aobut 450 miles round trip - all flat highway. I'm very interested in seeing what kind of mileage people have been getting - what can we expect without any modifications?

Be aware that the Excursion wheels are the same offset as 04 and earlier trucks and not the same as 05 06 trucks. The suspension did not change on the Excursion when the trucks did., You might look for 04 King Ranch 18" if you want factory.

I think you can put 04 17" on w/o problems. I have 20 x 10 with 305/50 Nittos (bigger brakes are in the works). I went from about 22 highway @ 75 to about 21 with this new tire & wheel set up. Combined, 18-18.5 mpg. BTW, performance mods can help with mpg...3-4 more on the highway, 2-3 city, 3 towing 7500 lbs.
18s will never fit, unless you have an aspect ratio of 20, I have a 3" lift and 315/70/17s and they rub on a full wheel turn. The 18s on the King are on the coil spring front so there are no leafs in the way.

The 2004 King Ranch late production had an 18" wheel that was on leaf springs. The 18" tire wheel combo was appx the same overall diameter as the 16". The offset was correct for the leaf sprg front end. The 04 harley may work also.
I think both were short production.

My idea was that the larger diameter would mean a longer circumference and translate to further down the road for each engine revolution. For example a 16" diameter cicle has a circumference of 50.24 inches, where a 18" diameter circle has a circumference of 56.52 inches - 12.5 percent more. Assuming that the distance between the wheel and the bottom of the tire were the same, it should yield at least 12.5% increase in mpg. Of course this is all theory and doesn't take into account the extra tire weight - compared to the overall weight of the vehicle, could and extra 50 to 100 pounds for larger tires really have a significant impact on mpg?
By the way, aren't wheelbarrows easier to push with larger wheels? Wouldn't that mean that larger wheels would make even more effective use of the horsepower?

If the overall diameter of the tires on an 18" is the same as the 16" it sort of negates the whole purpose of changing. Thanks for the input - one less fuss to make.

Your mileage will vary based on the quality of diesel you use. I see about 15 in the city and low 20's on the highway. If you are traveling on I95 or I75 then you will run a much higher cursing speed and you mileage will go up a little. For what I have read the cursing speed of the X is somewhere in the upper 70's. Therefore, the mileage is very good, it was a wise purchase.
If you go to bigger tires you WILL loose mpg. I went to 285/65 and lost 1.5 to 2 mpg. They have this truck set up just right for the max mpg. Any changes seems to lower your mpg. If you want higher mpg then go to 235s I think with the same overall diameter. The narrower tire will help with mpg.

I have 285's and with them it put my speedo more accurate to slightly low up high (like < .5 MPH over 70 MPH), thus overhead more accurate and I haven't lost MPG, however, I've had them since new. I see better MPG than a lot of guys but I also don't run 75-85 MPH on the HWY. Over 70 it's drops to 17-19 MPG. 60-70 MPH I can get over 20 and 12-14 towing. MPG has also gotten slightly better this summer as I get some miles on it. Almost 23k miles now.
