Hi everyone!
I posted this under 7.3l SD's but then I found this forum.. Awesome!
I would like to know which year Excursion diesel is the best one and why. I tow a bit.. 26' Sunline TT, 19' SeaPro CC boat and other small trailers. I believe the Excursion diesel only comes with a 7.3l PS except for the newest ones?? Is this true?? If not, what other diesel engine options exist in which year excursions? What kind of hiway/unloaded mileage can I expect from this vehicle?? What prices should I expect to pay for a used excursion in good to very good condition in years 1999 to 2004 with modest mileage from 75K to 125K?
As you can tell I'm a newbie to Ford Diesels and I'm just throwing out questions so please feel free to answer any or all you have info on..
I appreciate all the knowledge you folks have and any info you can pass on to this guy who is interested enough to seriously consider buying a PS excursion is sincerely appreciated!!
Thanks!
Todd in Maryland
PS Diesel is $2.11 in S. Md. now

'99-'02 had the 7.3PSD
'03+ (or is it 04???) has the 6.0PSD
Both have their pros and cons, just read up on it.
As for price:
I paid $27K for mine. '01 Limited 4x4, leather, flawless inside and out, 60K miles, came with balance of ford premium care 6yr/100K mile warranty which covers essentially everything in/on/related to the vehicle.
BTW, just filled up here in vegas for $2.09/gal. today

I paid $24k for my 2002 7.3L with 82k miles. It is a Limited and has everything except DVD and a sunroof. I looked for a while. If mine's mileage was under 50K or right around there I probably would not have been able to touch it for under $30k. Hell what's 82K on a PSD?
Hi Todd Welcome to the Excursion slot
I also have a 7.3L Excursion and wouldn't trade the engine for any other,I'm a believer in the Tried & True 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel
There's pre-owned 7.3L Excursions starting to trickle in and the deals are pretty good from what I gather
We're paying $1.71 for Diesel finally

Anybody in Detroit area got an 01-02 Limited 4WD PSD, for less than 25K let me know. Very hard to find in Michigan.
Great vehicles...just bought my wife a 2000 Limited with TV's / DVD player, and 125w. amp. and aftermarket speaker. The vehicle was used driving between Houston and Dallas (highway miles) and oil was changed every 3,000 miles. I paid mid $18,000.00 and it had 117,000 miles on the clock. I like the 2000 year (my F-350 is the same year) for the simpleness of the computer (most chips are based off the NVK4 codes from that year), transmission, and forged rods these engines have. Mileage on highway varies with speed but you should see around 18 mpg.
Diesel is down to $1.88/gal.

I just bought an 01, with the good motor, August build date (no powdered metal rods) 90k miles with remote start, 2 lcd screens, dvd, vhs, tv tuner, Nintendo system.
I personally was looking for an 00 or early 01 to avoid the bad rods. Its probably not a major deal unless you want to mod it but i could not seem to over come it. There are some better colors and better features in the later years like digital climate control, steering wheel radio controls. I also looked for trailer tow package and the C1 posi axle.
I am doing a 4inch exhaust, diablo or evolution programer and full guages (boost, pyro, tranny temp).
I just bought mine 2 weeks ago.

I'm also looking again (back to work), and there are a couple in the area again.
After looking and reading this board and driving a few, I've narrowed my search to an '02 limited. They seem to have a little more power than the earlier ones, and more amenities that I like. They seem to be going for around $30K in the SLC, UT area where I live. I'm also considering an '03 with the 6.0...but I'm very wary on that. '04 and newer are too much $$ for me.
At first I was planning on chipping and exhaust and all that, but now I'm not sure if I will or not. Anyone who's seen my jeep knows I'm not afraid of mods, but I'm just not sure if the gains are worth the headaches I keep reading about. I'm certain I'll do the U or V springs and better shocks.
Pulled a local summit in 2nd gear at 3700rpm (55ish) towing my jeep this afternoon in my big block gasser...a guy in a cummins pulling a 3 horse trailer passed me easily doing around 65 or more. sigh.

DO NOT buy an '03 with 6.0L diesel. '04 is fine, but the '03 models had lots of issues due to the new engine needing "kinks" worked out of it. You CAN find the '03 models with the 7.3L diesel, and they are great.
I have an 04/03 EB X with the 6.0. It was one year old the end of November and I have put 24000+ trouble free miles on it. Most of those miles have been interstate driving pulling a 7000# camper. The early 03 motors did have some problems, but the percentage of problems versus those with no problems is small. Sure, you will find plenty of people on the various forums that complain about the 03 motor, but look at the overall number of vehicles put on the road against those numbers who complain with a problem. If you find an 03 motor out there that suits your needs, don't discount it merely due to it being possibly bad, have it checked out, if it passes, buy it and love driving it for years to come. I appreciate all the good info on this thread.
You have given me much info for my search and I'll be asking more questions for sure.
Thanks to all of you.
