I had the Compustar alarm system installed several weeks ago. They used the chip from one of my keys to bypass the PATS system when the alarm is in use. I didn't get a chance to get a new key before they installed the alarm. Now, my truck is in for some work and asked about getting a new key. They wany $70 for a new key and $60 to program it. They said you could program it yourself but you need both keys. Something about placing the new key next to the switch and using both keys to start the vehicle. Since I don't have a complete second key they want $60 to look up the code and do the programming.
Does this make sense! WOW $130 for a new key!

Try your alarm installer like H ED S sugests and try a different dealer. I paid $25.00 for my key and rather than letting them program it for me at $60.00 bucks (the guy insisted it could only be done with their special computer)I flashed my own.

The key cost $22 at the Ford dealer, and I programmed it myself. The instructions are in the Owners Manual. It took me a second time to do it quick enough. If you mess up the programming, the engine cranks with out starting.
I did the same thing. I got the auto-start alarm installed and they had to use my second key. I called on the way home to get info about a second key and they told me I needed both keys to program it or they would charge me $30 dollars. I went back the next day and bought a new key for $23 and went to the alarm installer. He removed the key out of the dash (took maybe 30 seconds) and I programmed the new key (see instructions below), then he put the new-cut key back into the dash because it didn't say 'Ford' on it.
Instructions to program key:
1. Get both original keys PLUS new key.
2. Put first key in, turn to on position (do not start) and count to 3.
3. Put second key in, turn to on position (do not start) and count to 3.
4. Put new key in, turn to on position (do not start) and count to 3.
5. Done ! (oh yea, I forgot..after step 1, call Ford and tell them to get bent)
Has anyone been able to program more than 3 extra keys? The manual says you can program 8 if I recall. I like to keep keys in boat, fishing camp, etc etc. But after 3 extras, it won't work anymore. BTW, when you buy a truck, just tell the salesman you want extra keys as part of the deal. They don't charge you.

Long story-but I got 5 "programmed" keys and a dummy one that just opens the door. 3 of the programmed keys are Ford and two are aftermarket. The dealer did this for me at no charge.

I chose an alarm that didn't require the permanent use of either of my keys. DEI (makes of the Viper alarm) has a kit specifically for the Ford key system so you don't need to sacrifice one of your keys. You just need both keys at installation time for programming purposes.
