My buddy just got his 2001 PSD Excursion. It's a 4x4 and did not come with a transfer case skid plate. I was looking over the 2001 booklet and it indicates that a transfer case skid plate is not available on a 7.3L diesel. Anyone know why?

I was told they were on hold and would delay my '01 PSD Xcursion. Had planned on ordering skid plates from the dealer and installing them locally. I can't imagine what the problem is. Why order 4 wheel drive if you have to worry about what you run over. Have always included skid plates on last five trucks: 99 Navigator (great truck but feel bad taking such a fancy looking vehicle into the places I have to go) 97 Expedition (really great truck that I let my daughter talk me out of!) 93 Suburban also great and sold at 150,000 miles; 88 Suburban which I thought was shot at 110,000 miles and sold to an engineering firm who put another 200,000 cheap miles on it before it died, and finally an 87 Jeep cherokee which lost its engine just recently and 150,000.

I was told when ordering an Excursion in May 2000 that the skid plates were on hold and it would delay the order. The dealer recommended deleting it from the order and they would order it separately and install it for the same price as if I had gotten it with the truck.
I did that. The truck arrived in early June and the skid plate arrived in early July, and they bolted it on in about 10 minutes.

I bought the Excursion late April. The dealer ordered a skid plate for me and I forgot about it until last week. When I scheduled to have them put it on, the parts guy said it wasn't there, but would order it and have it in 2 days.
It was there as promised, although he may have found the one ordered earlier tucked away in storage rather than actually ordering another one.
I just purchased my Excursion and am awaiting possession (DOA: split radiator seam). It wasn't ordered with transfer skid plate. I tried to order through the parts department, but they 1)can't find the part number, 2) say Ford doesn't offer it. Would one of you that special ordered the skid plate let me know the stock number and cost. Thanks.
I ordered my skid plate 9/9/00 and picked it up 9/20/00. Installed it last night, about a 5 minute job. P/N is FOTZ7E063A (first O is the letter, second 0 is the digit). List was $80, I paid $56. Go straighten out your dealer!

Skid Plate came in. 3 holes per side to attach; do you remember what you used for nuts & bolts - dia. & length? Did you use a flat washer on the oblong hole? Are these galvanized hardware?
Thanks for helping a newby.
2000PSDX: I used a flat washer on both sides with a split ring lock washer on the nut. My dealer gave me the hardware since the skid plate didn't come with it. Even so, you can go to a hardware store and get #5 grade hardware (a little stronger than "standard" hardware). You can measure the hole, but I think it was 3/8" hardware. If this isn't enough help I can check the exact hardware size tonight and let you know. I just remembered an important detail. The stamping of the part left the holes a little out of round so I had to use a round rat tail file just a little to get the bolts to go thru the hole in the plate. Let me know how it goes. The bolts were about 1 1/4" long and were just zinc plated, nothing special.

I remember some early news stories about the Excursion that indicated that Ford was concerned about the Ex "riding up" on a smaller vehicle in a frontal impact. The "blocker beam" connected to the front of the vehicle frame was to prevent this. This is almost the opposite of the skid plate function, which would serve to protect the "underbelly" of the vehicle when "riding up" on an off road obstacle. IMHO, the decision to leave off the skid plate may be related to a decision to not give the vehicle this "ride up" tendency on frontal collisions. Sound plausible?

I just added a Skid Plate to my 2001 Excursion also. Got it from Ford for $58. DJH is correct about the hardware being 3/8 by 1.25 inches long. I also used washers on both sides with a split washer next to the nut. I used a Nylock nut along with a little medium strength threadlocker. I bought all my grade 5 hardware from my local hardware store for just a few dollars. The holes in my skid plate were tight and elongated as mentioned by DJH, but the bolts fit perfectly into the existing holes in the frame. One quick zip of a drill bit to shave off 1/32 or so allowed my 3/8 bolts to easily slip into the elongated holes of the skid plate. It's a very quick and easy install and well worth doing.
As it turns out, I stopped by the Ford dealer today (for another reason) and armed with the parts page number from the below post: http://forums.ford-diesel.com:8080/u...ML/001284.html
With this information, the parts folks were able to find a graphic including the tranfer case skid plate and it's fasteners. I will post additional stock numbers when I get my invoice in a few days (parts on order).
Fastners came in; but they were puny, 10mm heads. Went with (4) 1"x3/8" grade 5 instead. You'll need to open the plate's holes slightly for the 3/8", but frame holes are large enough. Can supply fastner numbers if anyone wants; but, I don't recommend using.
Shouldn't there be a skid plate over the transmission pan also???
