I have decided to replace my '90 GMC Suburban with the Limited Excursion and am seriously considering the PSD, though I have never owned a diesel. The dealer did not have an Excursion on the lot so I test drove both a 250 and 350 pickup and the engines were noisier than I anticipated. So...my question is: Would the Excursion be as loud or would it have more sound deadening qualities?

I believe it's quieter. We have a 97 and 99
PSD trucks and the 00 PSD Excursion. The 99
is quieter than the 97 by a lot, the Excusrion is a little better than the 99.

I think you'll find by reading through the posts that most of the people in these forums bought the diesel because they love the noise, and most probably wish they were louder

The Excursion is quieter in the cabin than a similar SD pickup. I think they have more insulation on the firewall to muffle the sound.
Anyway, I found the V10 to be EXTREMELY quiet under just about any condition except hard accelleration. The PSD was more noticable but sounded kinda "cool" in my opinion.
Both engines have their ups and downs. The V10 is quieter and smoother. The PSD is more powerful and will almost certainly last longer. My test drive indicated that neither would have too much trouble moving the heavy Excursion and a decent-sized trailer around.
Really appreciate the comments gentlemen. While I understand the "purr" of a diesel is like music to some, as a first timer I'm looking first at towing capacity (30' travel trailer), fuel economy, and durability. From what I read here and elsewhere, PSD owners are quite satisfied with their selections. My dealer expects to have a PSD Excursion in about three weeks. BTW, Wayne, I see you're in Jackson, WY. I've scheduled a week next May at a working ranch in Cora.

If your looking at it for towing, then the PSD is the way to go; hands down. Not only more towing power but much better fuel mileage. Granted I have a P/U, but I get about 12 MPG pulling a 28' 5th wheel. You'd never get that good of mileage with a gasser pulling a trailer. You'll just need to learn to let the turbo cool down before shutting down the engine when towing.

I didn't buy any of our PSD's for the love of the noise. I like the stink of the diesel. Especially good when my wife picks me up at the airport; and all the smokers are standing around outside puffing away. She pulls up in one of our PSD's and clears the curb. Seriously, the PSD's really go up hills; we pull a horse trailer and they do a much better job of it than our F350 with the 460 engine ever did.
