Is this normal, or is it time for a lift kit?

My front end rides like crap, hits the bumpstops constantly. So I took a look and a picture. Is this normal distance from the bumpstop?

I am thinking of doing an X code spring swap in the front. and a shackle flip in the rear to get some lift.

Here are the pics. Mind you this is just parked in the driveway.

OK Bruce the front spring guy here

Ok from the photo you have about .75 or a bit more ave.

You have a mid 02 or earlier X so change those front stops to the 03 stops now they are 13 to $15 each if you get any discount at all. they are a bit shorter and softer

Also I and guessing there is from 45 to 60 K on the truck based on the sag I see.

See my charts and posts by me and others on this subject.

For normal "WHAT IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FROM THE FACOTRY" U and V codes are used

From where you are now Us will gain you about 1.5 and Vs about 1.75 adding back the .25 or more you are saged from the chart heights.
Change to the shorter stops and you will be back close to a reasonaable 2.25 to 2.5 travel range you can live with.

Of course these are just my thoughts and opinions

Bruce

Re: Is this normal, or is it time for a lift kit?

It is always time for a lift. I used the V codes and a 1.5 add a leaf for the same 3" the X code gives. No sag in 60K. Just get a 4" block for the rear, make sure it is tappered, and you are done. I didn't replace the shocks for a long time, I did replace the U bolts too.

Re: Is this normal, or is it time for a lift kit?

That is normal. When i bought our exc. i took a trip from mn to conn. and going through chicago was rough bad highways but i was not happy with the ride started looking around for answers, come to find out that the tires were a 10ply tire which is like a concrete tire super hard for towing i went to a 20" rim and 8ply tire and MAN! night and day drove way smoother and handled nice.So maybe check to see if the tires are 10 ply and maybe go to an 8ply you will have a good enough tow rating w/those,i hope that helps. Yep, my '04 has about 1/2" on the drivers side and about 3/4" on the passenger side. Difference is the '04 (maybe '03 too) has the soft cellular material bump stops that are made to be "ridden" on basicly. Makes the slam easier to take. LOL

Re: Is this normal, or is it time for a lift kit?

Hey Bruce, I have a question for you, how much lift would an 05 with no sag get from a pair of U codes with say 20k miles on them? They were under my V-10 F-250 for about a year and a half.

Thanks,

AUG

BTW sorry for the Highjacking.

I don't see a problem it is all about front springs!

There are some rumers that ford "revised" the front springs in 04 and 05 but is not talking, all codes are the same.

I have not replaced them on my 05 yet when I do I will put them side by side with the Ds from my 02 and will know for sure. If they did change them I am guessng they changed the arch just a bit.

To answer your question I would be surprised at anythng less than an inch and sould be no more that an 1 3/8".

Funny you should ask I have intended to pull my X into the shop so that I know it is level and measure it to see if I was going to get Us or Vs or??.

Just did it and It will get a V on the left and a U on the right the left is already sitting 5/16 of an inch lower than the right WITHOUT my fat but in it even with the "box o stuff" I keep in the right rear.

It should level it up almost even until I sit in it that is

Looks like Ford may be getting ready to do different springs (Left vs Right) up front in 07 since the new coil type in 05 have dual codes up front but they are they are always the same as far as I know.

Bruce
