"Not DOT approved" headlight bubs question

I am looking at PIAA 9007 bulbs for the x (gonna get the KarKraft.com lens). There is "Platinum Super" and "Xtreme White". Platinum super are not DOT approved and the Xtreme white are. Anyone know the real difference? Both are 55/65 watt. The Xtreme has a brighter color temp whatever that is.

Even if they are not 'approved', how do you get caught? I have three 580's on the front and they are clearly not right on public roads, but how bad or obvious can 55/65's be?

Re: "Not DOT approved" headlight bubs question

I decided on the Sylvanis Star Lite bulbs. They light up the road much better than the stock. And it doesn't throw the bluish hue.

You asked "how do you get caught". Lets play judge judy.

Your headlights shine in another motorists eyes and he claims it blinded him and caused HIS accident. A subsequent investigation shows you had Non DOT approved bulbs (brighter than DOT allows).

Fill in the blank ____________ is responsible for the accident based on BRIGHT non approved headlight bulbs.

It all comes down to how much risk in life you want to take.

I take plenty.

When the time becomes available I'll be upgrading to the Silverstars and an upgraded headlight wire harness too

Re: "Not DOT approved" headlight bubs question

I also went the way of the Silver Stars. They are nice and have a white color to them. Also went with the Silver Star (9005 high beam bulbs)for the factory FOGs (went from 37 watts to 60 watts - same plug base and mount). Didn't do a harness change as the wattage is the same as stock for the headlights. I'm watching the FOGs to see if they are getting over heated or not (figured the socket is the same so the power should be OK).
The Silver Stars are alot cheaper @ $20 each from AutoZone.

I got the PIAA Super Whites 9007 replacements (HB5 65/55W xtra)
Unlike some, I've not done an exhaustive study with scientific comparison data to back up my claims...

I have nothing to compare it to except the stock lamps it replaced, but IMHO, they are WELL worth the replacement...

As you can see from my sig & gallery, I also added other lights just to ensure I see what I'm about to run over...

good luck!

Re: "Not DOT approved" headlight bubs question

I saw the silver stars on ebay for 38$ a pair. Couldn't resist. Same color temp as the stronger PIAA's. I will plug them into the stock lens to see what happens. I expect I will replace the lens too because 1/3 the problem is light pattern. I just appears to difuse itself in front of the truck. Another 1/3 has to be the wiring harness. The lights are just plain yellew and dim. So bulbs, lens, then harness. I'll post the results.

Re: "Not DOT approved" headlight bubs question

Where can replacement headlights be bought?? I only see one vendor listed on the sponsors page. Are there others ?

I also want to be able to run the higher wattage bulbs, & I have a harness that I took off my old Suburban. Getting old, can't see worth a damn at night...

Re: "Not DOT approved" headlight bubs question

I was thinking of going here next for the new reflectors. Got the link from a post here. Got a good reco on them from the post.

I did the bulbs already. Very noticeable improvement over stock. The color is white not yellow, it goes a little farther. I also aimed the lights properly then cranked them up one full turn. They don't seem to be bothering people ahead of me.

Problem is, they still suck. The light is simply too diffused. I have never had or seen a vehicle with such weak headlights. Uh, no, correction, my 6 volt beetle was pretty bad.

If you get the lights from karkraft let me know what you think.
