Question NW here-03 Excursion making popping/banging sounds/powerloss

Hi everyone. I thought I'd try to get some help here before taking in my 2003 Diesel Excursion into the shop again. Took it in for this same problem. They said they fixed a gasket or something that cost me $140 and it's still having the same problem.

When I put on the gas or go up hills, it sounds like a loud popping, banging, backfire sound coming from the engine, more on the driver side I think. Not sure though.

I lose gas power when this happens and it feels like it's chugging until I take my foot of the gas pedel and go really really slow to get it going up to speed again.

Any advice on what could be wrong? We've changed the fuel and air filters on it.

TIA
Holly

MAN! I am having the same exact problem.....changed fuel filters, air filter, and new EGR valve.

When I put a trailer on it, it gets worse.

I'm not willing to bring to dealer just yet. I have some mods and I'm sure they will blame the mods on it. Even though I know the exhaust and air intake are not the issue....it happened before I did them....thinking it would help.

Next I am going to check the turbo tubes for leaks....I'm think when the pressure is built up it sucks air where it isn't supposed to and causing the popping noise.

Let's keep in touch and post up if either of us find a solution.

Thanks and may the Powerstroke force be with you

Hi Joe, it ended up being the turbo. Got it replaced under the warranty which only had a couple weeks left.

They overlooked the K&N filter and put a stock filter back on and Ford paid for the new turbo. I paid for the stock filter though. Cost me about $500 but better than having to pay for the new turbo too.

sweet deal HH - thanks tons for letting me know. I plan on pulling the turbo off and inspecting it very soon. I will post an update as I do it.

Had this same problem with mine. Ford has a TSB regarding this matter. Finally found a dealer who knew enough to investigate my complaint. Faulty turbo, blown head gasket and cracked cross-over exhaust manifold. All replaced by Ford.
