Hi folks. I've been reading this forum for a few weeks as I get closer to ordering an 02 Exc w/PSD and have enjoyed all the great dialouqe. On the PSD, when you change the oil is it just an oil and filter or is there a water separator that has to be changed at the same time or does the filter double as a water separator? Again, I'm new to the diesel world. Also, a friend of mine said that the local dealer told him that he could go as much as 5000 miles between oil changes on his 2001 PSD due to the quantity of oil in the engine. Is that a true or recommended interval?
Thanks in advance for the help. By the way, my user name is actually the name of my boat; something I could remember.
Well, you just change the oil filter for the oil change. You change the fuel filter, which is in the fuel/water separator every 15,000 miles. 4,000 - 5,000 miles is ok. The engine takes 15 qt, so yeah, there's a good bit of oil to spread the trash around in. Figure $9 for oil filter at wal*mart, and 4 one gallon jugs of Rotella T. A DIY oil change costs usually around $30 or so when you are all done.
At least at every oil change I drain the water separator/fuel filter when in town and buying fuel from the dealer I trust. On the road, I drain to check for water every 1000 miles or so. Oil change are a snap. Do all of mine. Be sure to remember to grease the front end when changing the oil.
Thanks guys for the info. I was able to look in my Exp service guide that also addresses diesels which indicated to change the fuel filter every 15K miles. Once I get it, I'll have to read all I can about it.
I change mine every 4,000 miles and send a sample to Blackstone Labs. Their response indicates this is about right for my driving style. (15-20 legs and a couple of road trips) The third oil change is coming up and I hope the next lab analysis will indicate the engine is finally broken in.!!! I am using Rotella-T. Will change fuel filter at 15,000.
Hello Aquaholic. I too have been lurking around this site for a couple of months. I have found the same level of knowledge and helpfullness here as on S&F with our boats. This is one awsome site, but I now have to print out the threads to read at home because there is SO MUCH info. Gotta get some work done too...
Good luck on your new truck... You KNOW in your head, you already have it in your driveway!
It is a site dedicated to outboard (mostly) powered speed boats. The vast majority of the members run 18-22' single engine rigs. Some longer, and dual/triple power too! The "scream" part of the websites name is from the 2-stroke sound of the outboard motors, and the "fly" part is because most of these boats take advantage of air entrapment under the hull for added lift at higher speeds (70mph plus). I have no idea how the V-hull guys (allison's etc) can go that fast (easily 100mph plus), as I am new to high performance boating with a "family bowrider" that will only go 74mph so far... but I as still learning to drive it.
The members are VERY informed, and helpful to all levels of experience in performance boating at all budget levels too.
Give the site a look, but I am warning you, that one is as addicting as this one!
I got some GREAT advice from this board on oil changes when I bought my Ex (18 months ago). Couple of recaps:
a) Buy the K&N oil filters as they are high quality, and have a 1" lug nut on the bottom...just use your ratchet! You can get these filters from DIJ(?) at about $11 apiece if you buy five. Ditto on the fuel filters.
b) Buy some small magnets and put them on the bottom of your oil pan and even on the filter. This will "trap" metallic particles. Remove them RIGHT BEFORE you drain the oil/remove the filter. Great idea.
c) The Fumoto drain valves and other similar systems seem to make changes a snap. Haven't bought them yet personally, but they sure look nice.
d) MAKE SURE YOUR DRAIN PAN HOLDS AT LEAST 15 QUARTS!!!! Don't want THAT kind of surprise!!! LOL.
Thanks for the great info guys. Really appreciate it! Looks like I'll be changing oil and filter myself and saving $$$ compared to the dealer's asking price of $79.99+tax. Ouch!
I'm not the most mechanically inclined person around, so, last oil change I went to Walmart. They charged $56 (aprox) for the oil and LUBE. Only problem was that the next morning, I took a look at the zerk fittings... they were covered in dried mud still. So, if you take it in, check out the fittings before you leave to make sure they got lubed!
Take care,
Chris
P.S. Whoever thought of that magnet idea - dang thats smart!
