I have a 2000 PSD EX with 9000 miles on it, I have changed oil on it every 3000 miles. By the time the oil is ready for changing (3000 miles on it) it is down to the "add" mark, which means it has used 2 qts. Is this unusual? If not any suggestions? Thanks
I recall this subject coming up several times before. If I recall correctly, you may not actually be using the oil but rather throwing the oil. Apparently some engines don't need to be topped off to the top of the fill line and will find their own level somewhere between the add and top lines. You might want to monitor you oil level very closely right after a change to see where the oil is going. It may well be that you only need to fill to the add line on your stick.
I would also suggest doing a search in the archives. Patience will obviously be necessary to wade through the oil topics to find what you need.
My x uses 1 quart every three thousand miles.
my 450 uses 1 quart every 5 thousand miles.
my two 99 psd vans use 1 quart every 4 thousand miles. Your useage may be a little high have you seen any oil anywhere under the motor? My x had to have the orings replaced at the back of the motor. Also check your exhuast you may have a leaking injector o ring witch wil show up as blue smoke. hope theis helps mike

My X has not used any oil.
The first 3,500 miles were on the freeways at speed. I waited till I had 4727 miles before first oil change.
Just checked oil this morning @ 7,500 miles no usage.
I have been told that a diesel should use some oil but this one has not started.

I just got my 01 Excursion and the book says capacity is 15 qts including filter. Don't know how the usage will be in it, but my 97 F-350 CC has 88k. I change oil every 5k and have never had to add in between. I use Shell Rotella only.
I had the same oil problem with my 2000 psd. Every time I checked the oil it was down. I let it go below the low mark on the stick as the Ford engineer suggested and it just kept disappearing. Finally, after 4 trips to two different dealerships and 9 quarts of oil I informed my dealer that it was time for the lemon law. When I told them I was going to put cases of lemons on the PSD and park it across the street with some very informative language, they agreed to get me another 2000 psd. There are no 2000 psd with 8000 miles so they got me a 2001 psd same color, limited with all the same options and a few more bells and whistles. I paid them $2k for the upgrade what is less than the amount I would have incurred under the GA lemon law for usage. My new 2001 psd has not burned a drop of oil and I have 5000 miles on it. Stick to your guns and don't except the BS from Ford.

I have a 2001 Limited, it used 2qts by the first oil change at 4800 mi. I changed oil and filter, put 15qts in as the manual specified and it is over the full mark by about two quarts. Is this a problem? Used Chevron Delo 400 by the way.
Too much oil can cause problems. 2 quarts is a lot over. I would drain it off to the proper level. After you get oil soaked doing it, you might want to install a fumoto drain valve. They work well in such situations and are worth the $20.
I changed oil 1st time @ 4200+ miles. I did not use any oil till I connected to a heavy tow for RV 9,000+lbs. By 8,400 miles I had used one quart. Return trip no usage. Must add at start I had to learn how to tow RV and not turn 2,500+ RPM.
But still happy with X

No extra oil added in 8600 miles (crossing fingers).
Changed oil myself at 2K,5.3K,8.5K. 1+ quart goes in the filter before installing, total oil amount of 15 quarts, added while carefully checking the dipstick to not overfill (run, check for leaks, turn off and top off to a max of 15 total quarts). Blackstone oil analysis each time. Like the Fumoto valve. Added a little magnet to the pan as the drain plug was magnetic (to trap metalic stuff in the oil).
Examine carefully for oily places in engine compartment. If still burning oil after you think it should be somewhat broken in, I'd have the dealer doing some checking...
