Owners with 285's or 295's - Feedback Solicited Please

Hey gang:

I'm thinking of making the switch to 285's (not sure what brand) or the Nitto Terra Grappler 295(3415 load rating-same as 265 E's). I'd like some feedback as to how you like your upgraded tire size. A few questions:

Speedo recallibrated?
Impact on tranny (shift points)
Impact on braking?
Impact on mileage?
Sidewall stength/flex?
Would any of you go back to 265's?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Owners with 285's or 295's - Feedback Solicited Please

285s
Fit fine
Ride Fine

Look great Like stock+

They put the speedo about right on however the Odometer is about 2% off

No difference percieved in breaking

Improved handling, but more the tire than the size I think

Over all the Revos have not had a bad review I know of and your chances of getting them are improved since it is BridgeStone/Firestone product

And the spare cover will fit.

Re: Owners with 285's or 295's - Feedback Solicited Please

While the 285's fit fine and look great, my 2001 7.3 PSD does not have the acceleration as with the standard 265's and my milage went down. So - at my next tire change I'm going back to the 265's. Now my brand new 2004 6.0 rocks - it's sooooo fast I'm constantly doing 90 and don't know till I check the speedo - I think this truck will have no problem's going to 285's.

Re: Owners with 285's or 295's - Feedback Solicited Please

Thanks guys. Went to install 295's and they rubbed on hard left turn. Measuring with stock 265's, with wheel turned hard left the tire and fender liner have .75-.8 inches of clearance. A 285 will eat up .65 of that since the tire is 1.3 inches bigger in overall diameter thus leaving .10 -.20 inches of clearance. That's not much at all. You guys with 285's have not rubbed at all? Are you sure?

Re: Owners with 285's or 295's - Feedback Solicited Please

BFG's AT's 285 with "U"codes (if that makes a difference) No, Zero, Notta rub. I spend I long time washing and cleaning the fender wells everytime I was the truck, and I have not noticed any rubbing.

I have however noticed a little difference in break pedal feel. I think it is all in my head cause there is only 6.38# difference between a Firebomb 265 E and these tires.

Positive - never rubbed. Have almost 50,000 K on the Michelin 285s. Love 'em.

Re: Owners with 285's or 295's - Feedback Solicited Please

In doing a little more research I found that my right side front fender well has 2" (almost 1.75" more clearance) between tire and fender liner at hard right turn. I think I can pull back the liner a tad bit and secure it out of the way to ensure clearance of 285's. I know the truck looks better with 285s on.

Re: Owners with 285's or 295's - Feedback Solicited Please

I have 285 Coopers and don't rub but I have a 3" lift. I am ready to get 315s on different rims. I hope they don't rub.

Re: Owners with 285's or 295's - Feedback Solicited Please

I put 285 LTX M/S Michelins on recently- replacing the Firebombs just before the recall :-( - and they made an *incredible* difference. I highly recommend them. But they did rub on the left fender well [under your foot]. It seems the the parking brake cable loops behind it and creates less clearance.

Three attempts reshaping the plastic with a heat gun, and the problem is solved. Definitely worth the trouble. 'Still considering a 2" lift though...

Regards,
-C.w.

I have 285 Toyo's on my 01 EX 4x4. It was told to me by Discount Tire that they were the exact same tire as Nitto's. I'm at stock height and had a little rub on the optional Ford mud flap, right side only. Heat gun fix, no problem. cliffsurfs

Cdub:

You hit the nail on the head. The brake cable is the reason the liner is pushed out a bit reducing clearance. I'm going to pull that liner back and secure it a bit to make the clearance. Thanks.

Bruce: How are you? I hope you are doing well.

Re: Owners with 285's or 295's - Feedback Solicited Please

I'm a little late in the posting on this thread but we did upgrade from the stock 265's to the BFG TKO 285's white lettered out.
Our speedometer is actually more accurate than with the 265's,I verified my speedo via Garmin GPS which was right on the number therefor no recal was needed even tho Ryan offered the service while in Phoenix last January.
Tranny shifting points are about the same if not better for my liking.
Braking takes a little more advance pedaling but not much as I'm a turtle anyways
Mileage has been 16-18 around town and freeway is stying 19-22+ mpg depending if the NHRA bride drivies or I.
The sidewalls seem to be well built and not much flex compared to the stockers, the truck's ride and handling is much better when towing on the 285's.
Going back to 265's would be no big deal it's just the truck would look funny with little tires

Re: Owners with 285's or 295's - Feedback Solicited Please

I'm expecting the same thing speedo wise. Against GPS, my speedo is about 2.0 mph off (on the high side). At 70mph on speedo, GPS says 68. 285's ought to fix that. Having 285 Revo's installed tomorrow.
