PATS key ? - Diesel Forum

What is the deal with the PATS keys? I was told that if I need another one I am up a creek. I have two right now but if I lost one then I could not get another programmed.

i had lost a PATS key for my X....the dealer wanted $150 or so for a new key..i called around and found a local locksmith who had the equipment to program a new key..it cost $45 to program out the old key so it wouldn't start the engine, and cut/program a new key..

2 months later the "lost" key turned up under the seat of my other truck.. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif[/img]

you can program a 3rd key yourself if you have 2 working keys..you can't program a 2nd if you only have 1 working key..that may be what your other source was referring to..

Thanks for the info. Where is a good place to buy a 3rd blank key? Locksmith?

I bought my third blank pats key off ebay. Took it to local locksmith and had cut. I then programed it according the directions in the owners manual. To self program you have to have 2 working keys. Cost me $6.

Awesome. Are all the PATS keys that are on ebay the same? What I mean are some generic in some way that they may not function and I will just throw my money away on one. I am assuming that they would not have a Ford key on ebay??? I will look for the programming instructions in the manual as soon as I get a chance. I currently have two working keys.

One other ? on PATS. Are they waterproof? If they got washed in some pants or something is the electronic part ruined? Thanks for the help.

My friend is an automotive locksmith and originates transponder keys all day long.

Since you have 2 keys you can get a blank and have another key cut and program it to the truck yourself. Or give the locksmith a few bucks to do it.

If you only have one key GET A COPY NOW! Simply because it costs more for a locksmith to figure out the key cuts PLUS program a new key to your truck. You can get a copy made on a standard blank which will open the doors, just not start the truck.

If all keys are lost, the locksmith has to hook a special computer up to the truck that will allow a new key to be programmed to the truck after a 10 minute wait time. The 10 minute wait time is to keep people from just programming a key to take off with a vehicle.
