I went hunting this past weekend (for grouse) with a few buddies and took the Excursion up north and out on the hunting trails. We had to actually use 4x4 several times which was a first for me. Even in the snowy months here in MN, I never actually "need" 4x4, I can always get around with 2wd, 4x4 just makes it easier.
It rained all weekend so it was extra sloppy and we had a great time. Even got a couple grouse, too. I put a few pics of the X up here:
Click on the "October 2001 - Hunting" link for the pics. It's not as muddy as I used to get my Bronco, but it's probably more muddy than most Excursions will ever get. Mine is no longer a street queen -- the cherry has been broken!!
Tell me about the subs mounted in the cargo doors, if you don't mind. That looks like a good place for speakers.

The install job I have done right now for the subs in the rear cargo doors is mediocre, at best. However, it was a cheap alternative to getting custom fiberglass enclosures built. I just wanted something to fit the subs in and not have a big box in the rear taking up cargo space.
I still run my factory components, so the sound quality is nothing spectacular anyway. When I get around to upgrading the speakers, I'll get the rear doors re-done by a better shop.
The install was done at Circuit City. I got the Alpine display, DVD player, and CD changer through them at a nice discounted price so I opted to have them just install the rest of the stuff, too. It's a rather cheap install, as I already hinted at. There are about 4 layers of dynomat lining the rear doors. The panels that the speakers are mounted to are reinforced so that they hold the speakers. There is sound deadening material in the doors themselves so that it acts like a larger box than it really is.
It's a decent job, but if I had the money to do it again, I'd get custom fiberglass enclosures done and would have them make the enclosures more solid. I find myself taking it easy on the doors when I open and close them out of fear that it may wreck the install job. The next installation I have done will be done so that it can take a beating.
Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions.
I'm sorry, but I don't call that muddy at all. Mine looks like that after two weeks of driving around North Texas. I had grapefruit size balls and larger of "black gumbo" soil on the top of my Excursion last year during the rainy season. I must have washed 500 pounds of mud off the Ex that day. Sorry I don't have pictures. I was just glad to get out of the ditch without help. A little (or even a lot) of mud won't stop these babies. Good Luck. That was my Bronco, I know what getting a vehicle muddy means. That's the muddiest my X has been, and probably muddier than most X's will ever be. If you didn't get stuck, then you weren't in enough mud!
Erlong,
Yeah, now that's what I'm talking about. My Ex was that muddy and had larger mud clods on the top. Only 4X4's can get out and do this properly.
