My 03 6.0L Excursion Limited has Pirelli tires on it and with all of the comments on the Firestone Steeltexs I was wondering if this is just a Limited Excursion thing or what. I don't know much about Pireli tires and I have never owned any before. Any comments?

I don't know about pirelli truck tires, but they were standard equipment on porsches for a number of years (possibly still are) so they're probably a good quality tire.
Have a good one,
Dave

Ford switched over to Pirelli and BF Goodrich for tires on all X's. No more Firestones. 4x2 get Pirellis and 4x4 get BF Goodrich, or visa versa, I forget which.
This was done because Ford is pissed at Firestone or to save Ford some money. It was not done to give you a better tire.
Redfish,
Is your X 4x4 or 4x2? Not that it matters, as a favor to you, I'll still trade my awesome Firestone Steeltex tires......for your......Pirelli tires. I'm not sure if it's a 4x4 vs 4x2 thing; I think it's more of a AS vs AT thing.
Our 4x4 pickup came with Pirellis.

It is a 4x2...and it will be on the pavement more than the dirt so in my case it seems to make sense. I would not have been disappointed or worried with Steeltex's... just the stigma of the name... I am sure they are good tires. The Pirelli Scorpions are kinda nice looking, and some how don't look like a "real truck" tire. Seems to belong on a Porche or a Lamborghini.

I have 43,000 on the original Steeltex tires, no problems...
I went to Colorado with my buds in November on our annual elk sojourn. I drove a friends truck ('01 F250 Crew 4x4 "programmed" PSD) pulling a old steel gooseneck full of Polaris 4-wheelers and gear. He had on a set of BFG All Terrains. The buggy pulled like the trailer wasn't even there. Mileage wasn't anything to speak of. We got around 10 mpg going 80 most of the way. Any way, back to the tires. I was very impressed with the BFGs. They rode extremely well, much quieter than I thought they would be. No pull, drift or vibrations.
I have begun my homework on an '03 Ex. If memory serves, the Limiteds that I have seen had the Pirellis, EB and XLTs had the old Firestones.
I will be buying tires in the next month or so. I will be putting on a set of those BFGs. I liked they way they rode. Pretty sharp looking too, if you ask me.
Try some other tires first. I went with Michelin LTX M/S, and I got the following benefits:
1) Smoother ride.
2) Quieter ride.
3) Better wet-weather traction.
4) Better all-around traction.
5) Better fuel economy.
6) Higher load rating, should I ever need it.
And they clean up great, too.
As a hobby, I'm an EMT. Every patient I treat gets the same (high) level of care, regardless of color, race, sex, age, anything. I believe in high quality care, and I have since the first patient I treated. I don't believe in raising the quality after a lawsuit. I don't care if you think Firestone is the highest quality controlled tire now, it will slip back to where it was, because that's how the company operates.
Pirelli tires and Dunlop are the same company after a merge. They are probably the same as Dunlop. I just checked their web site and the auto tires are the same tread as the Dunlop. I have have used Dunlop for over 20 years not and have had good luck with them. Have the Dunlop 2.85s AT Rover on my truck now and they are great in the snow.

rfalcone,
You seemed to be impressed with the BFG A/T on the road, but how did they do off-road and in what conditions? I hope your trip was successful.
We did drive through some really wet snow coming through some of the passes on the way. The BFGs did extremely well on the snow. Some of the roads were plowed but some weren't. It really didn't seem to matter. They rode well through both.
Once we got to the rance it rain a bit. Mud didn't bother them either.
As far a being sucessful...it was a little too warm for the elk, they were still up in the higher elevations. We didn't get any thing this year but we LOOKED good, thanks to Cabelas!!!
