Re: Play in steering

There's an adjustment nut on top of the steering box that can be checked.

Here's a THREAD from this past October that might be of some help

Re: Play in steering

After reading the post don't know if I should tighten or loosen the steering box adjustment? Where should I start??? One more question should I have the tranny serviced or just leave it alone???? I've heard so many people having trouble after service. What has been your experience. Many Thanks

[/ QUOTE ] If the steering box is loose tighten it by turning the adjustment screw down. Make sure you check the rest of the front end by looking for loose parts while someone is turning the wheel a little back and forth, the trucks front tires have to be on the ground to do this. I have found the drag link loose at the pitman arm off the steering box causing weird steering issues and play along with other worn parts.
As far as the transmission, I would service it if it fails after it would have sooner of later anyways. I recommend flushing it or the methods used on TDS. With 53K on it I would not worry about it.

Re: Play in steering

Can any adjustments be made to the drag link at the pitman arm off the steering box if this is the case? If I adjust the steering box I loosen the nut first and the tighten the hex head adjustment screw then tighten the nut? Sorry to keep on asking questions I just want to be sure of what I'm doing.

Yes the steering box adjustment is like you describe, just don't go to tight a little at a time is all you need.
The only adjustment for a loose drag link is to replace it.

Re: Play in steering

Hey 01EX, Is your problem actually excessive steering wheel play, or are you trying to remedy the Excursion's common wandering ailment? The replies above have done well at addressing steering wheel play, but the wandering ailment originates from the Excursion's weak rear leaf springs. The weak springs allow unequal axle-wrap, and the rear axle ends up steering you unexpectedly.

I feel like it's excessive steering wheel play but I could be wrong. The X didn't do this when I bought it in Sept 04 it's something that started about 1 month ago. I will make small adjustment sometime this week and let you know. Can someone tell me how much the pittman arm is and if I can replace it myself.

Re: Play in steering

You don't need the pitman arm, Its just a chunk of steel with a tapered hole for the drag link short end to connect up to. The only time I ever replace this type of pitman arm is when the tapered hole is worn from the drag link nut loosening up or when the vehicle gets whacked and twists the splines on the sector shaft.
Have someone slightly turn the steering wheel like I described in my earlier post to check for excessive play. You could have the rear end spring issue but You were asking about "play in the steering" not why is my X all over the road. I don't want to see you spend your money on something you should not need.

....the Excursion's common wandering ailment?

[/ QUOTE ]

"Common ailment" may be misleading. Some trucks wander. Out of those, most are steering related (same as SD's) I'd go as far as to say most others, ride and drive straight and solid. I'm lucky and have one of the later.

I am not sure yet that I buy into the weak rear springs on the X, I do agree they are low and do not have travel, boy does that sound familiar!

Acourding to ford the X has stiffer springs in the rear than even a 350 DRW

Here are the numbers

Excursion G code is 410#

A code = I do not know could just be the B W/O the overload
B code = 320#/" and is 2.94 thick 5 leaf OL rate is 670 For SRW
c code = 350#/" and is 2.32 thick 5 leaf OL is 730 this is for DRW
