Re: which plow

Any of the major plow manufacturers make a great plow, western, fisher, boss or Blizzard. I would go with at least an 8' plow. I had a meyer commercial 8.5 that did not affect the front too much that also worked well. Dealer service/parts are the biggest issue.

Re: which plow

A friend who has has worked at Muskegon Brake for 25+ years answered that question for me recently.

Boss is the best & WAY overpriced.
Western & Fischer are same company & excellent (He owns Fischer due to trip action) Western has poly blade as an option. Poly blades weight 80lbs more than steel, always look good, snow doesn't stick to blade & makes really clean/ smooth banks, if that's important. Has seen a poly blade in an accident, Blade bent into 90degrees. Replaced blade frame & bolted poly to it, like new!
These three have great mount kits that are almost invisible when blade is unmounted.

Meyer is cheap, lift motors are really cheap,I had one, won't buy another.

8.5 ft blade minimum recommendation.

Re: which plow

X springs were a neccesity, 600lbs of ballast and I had to put an add leaf in the rear because I was nose high. Price is about $1500 more for a Blizzard. If you are plowing just for yourself, any plow will work. I plow commercially with mine and can increase my productivity 100% with the Blizzard. It does weigh 1000lbs!!!

Re: which plow

Search and yea shall find. I could go on and on about them, but there is pages and pages of info on them here. If you front leveling kit added some carrying capacity you won't need the x springs. I would say you are fine as long as you don't go to a v plow or the blizzard.

Re: which plow

Howard- you have a gasser, no? I can't imagine an 810 on the front of a diesel X. NJ- I'd go with an 8' or 8-1/2' "medium" duty plow. Not medium as in Medium-duty truck, but somewhere on the lighter end of commercial pickup plows. I have Western's 8-1/2' Pro-Plus. I REALLY like it, but with the weight of an X body and a diesel, I think it might be a bit heavy- likewise with a 810. If I were spending your money, I'd go with a western Pro-Plow 8 or 8.5. As far as mounts go, the Ultramount is above and beyond the rest- IMO. I can easily drive in and hook up in well under a minute.

Send me that spreader, howard!!

Burner, thanks for your advise, but i checked today with a Western plow dealer and he said " they don't have any plow for a 7.3, only the V10 and V8". Blizzard dealer has one and wants $4500. for it installed, and I will need to X springs, from what I've read here.So I dont know what to do next. Any idea's. thanks guys for your help and suggestions.

Re: which plow

I'll not try to steer you away from blizzard by any means, but trust me- if you can carry a blizzard 810- you can carry any thing in westerns line. For instance- my truck (CC Diesel) is not available from Uncle Henry with a snowplow prep package. Does this mean it is incapable of plowing snow? Certainly not! It plows snow better than anything I have ever driven. However, there are alot of lawyers out there who don't want their client to take responsibility for anything, so if Ford doesn't want a plow on it, western opens themselves up if they say "We support installing a plow on it". My guess would be that Blizzard doesn't technically support putting an 810 on a diesel X either, but you dealer is willing to overlook that in order to provide his customer with what he needs.

For instance, I bought all the parts for my plow as though I was going to install them myself, then paid cash for the installation with a handwritten "Labor" receipt. This way, if a liability issue ever arises, I could never prove that they (the dealer, western, etc.) never endorsed having this plow on this truck. Warranty has never been a problem- I haven't needed it.

If you decide that you are comfortable adding 800-odd pounds to the front of your X, find a plow you like at a price you can afford and buy it. Pay cash for install or whatever, but get the plow you want, not just the one someone will sell you. I'd buy my Pro-plus again, but I'd also be willing to give Blizzard a shot at the title, too- either one is a good deal. It all depends on how much weight you want to carry- an 8.5' Pro-Plow is 715#, while a Pro-Plus of the same size is 821#. Blizzard doesn't list weights on their website, but it's gotta be every bit of 800#, if not closer to 850.

Bottom Line- the plow you want is the one you can get GOOD service for- even if it snows on a saturday night. (as long as it isn't a Meyer!! )

Re: which plow

Burner, thanks for the advise.I think i will try anther Western dealer. The one I went to went to the Western web site and looked up a plow for my 2000 X w/7.3, and it didn't show any application for the truck, with that he said he couldn't help me.He also said the X front end must not be strong enough to carry the weight. I explained what I've seen here and that if the truck could carry a Blizzard plow it would be able to carry a Western plow. With that he said many dealers will put a plow on anything just to make the sale. So I will see if theres a dealer around here like that .I will also try the cash deal to see if that helps. thanks again.

Re: which plow

I've got a 8.5 ft. Western Pro Plow with back drag on the F250. Bought it when it was two years old used for $1,700 with mount and all wireing. Had to dish up $80 for the mounting nuts/bolts but installed it myself and saved a few hundred.

Used it when I had the 295's and no problems with stock suspension on the front. The plow only gets used for the driveway and ice fishing.

Re: which plow

The problem with any plow application guide is that Ford specifically states that installation of a snow plow is NOT RECOMMENDED. This is because the front blocker beam has to be unbolted and removed to install a plow mount.

This is a safety feature, and most do not want to mess with a safety feature.

Please note I do not say it is unsafe, I am explaining the plow manufacturer and Ford point of view.
