Poor Fuel Mileage Possible Fix

I have a friend with the 7.3 and his mileage has been going down hill. Come to find that the high preasure oil pump is going south and is the problem. if the injectors don't get the right preasure then dump fuel. The preasure should be around 2200lbs, his read 1200lbs. It is being replaced under warrenty and we will see soon if this is in fact the cause, there is no other reason and the preasure is way down.

Re: Poor Fuel Mileage Possible Fix

Can you tell us how they determined that this low pressure is a possible cause? Would like to hear more. What year is the Excursion in question and the mileage? thanks

Re: Poor Fuel Mileage Possible Fix

my 05 has been going down since it was new. My first trip I was getting 18.2 hand calc.over 1300 mile trip. I'm now lucky to get more then 16.4 on the same roads to my place in northern Wisc. from Chicago. If I put my 4 place open ATV trailer behind it I'm around 12.2. I have 13k on it now but at this point I drive my Jeep TJ cause it's more fuel efficent and those don't get that good. This is only 1 mile more per gal then my F250 with a V10 and a 4.30 gear got. plus it's about $1.20 gal cheaper now. dealer blames it on crappy fuel even though it's the same no matter where I buy it from.

Re: Poor Fuel Mileage Possible Fix

This is on a pick up but I would think it is the same. I guess the injector is slow because of this and lets too much fuel in. I guess oil preasure too low is not enough to fire them. This is what my neighbor has happening. I thought it was interesting.

Re: Poor Fuel Mileage Possible Fix

I know on a HEUI injection system, they are very critical to oil pressure. Since the oil pressure is actually what is being used to pressurize the fuel for the injection spray into the cylinder. So if you have low oil pressure you won't get enough fuel pressure to properly atomize the fuel and get a good mist versus drips.
