I've been experiencing a popping noise from the front driver side suspension anytime I accelerate or stop. It's even more pronounced when I'm towing which drives me crazy. The service department tighten up the front suspension but as soon as I pull off the lot I felt it again. So, I searched the excursion fourm and I found a discussion posted May 2000 between AXTINC and teamh regarding the same exact problem. I printed the discussion from May gave it to the service manager but they still didn't find the problem. Is anyone else been experiencing this?

If you could post a link to the previous thread it would be helpful. Is the popping occuring when you are turning at all or changing elevation on an angle. If so, it could be cab/body mounts. Do you have a popping and/ot thumping noise that is not directly speed related? If so, your sway bar links may be loose. These can appear to be tight on visual and manual inspection but nevertheless loose. I got fooled by this on my CC -- you have to put a wrench on the bolt and crank it to be sure.
XME, I have been having the same problem with my X. After reading some of the suggestions on this forum, I tightened the body mount bolt under the drivers side foot well, tightened the anti-sway bar bolts and it still made noise. I stopped at the dealership where I purchased it to pose the $64,000 question. They have admittedly been very helpful with various problems in the past. The service manager did some checking with the service people and also with Ford. She came back with 3 suggestions direct from Ford.
1) Tighten cab mount under drivers floor. (Already done)
2) Tighten all sway bar bolts. (Already done)
3) (And this is the hilarious one). Do some investigative work around the truck looking for the problem, and if found, evaluate its success and report to Ford!!!
She was beside herself when she read it to me from the Ford printout. At least the dealership was honest with me!
Well guys, I guess its up to us. Maybe it is an inherent design flaw in the truck and we just have to live with it. Maybe a performance muffler is in order as well as a stereo upgrade (amps.?)to drown out the clunking noises.

I had the same problem. The dealer replaced the body mount under the driver's foot area, and the noise went away...For nine months.
They are now replacing it again.
I recently put a Dynomax Ultra 3 1/2" straight through muffler on my CC. I expected the noise level to go up a bit over the OEM. Guess what? The truck was much quieter after the performance muffler went on. Go figure.
Anyhow, if your going to drown out sound, better stick with the stereo playing current kid music; that way you will be sure to drown anything out.
As Plr Br stated, was your noise the popping with turns and body twist or the clunk over bumps when driving straight down the road?
The cab mount is very close to the frame mount of the sway bar.
The noise occurs when accelerating from a dead stop or quickly decelerating. It doesn't happen when turning or changing the angle of elevation alone, only if there's a change in directional torque. However, I sometimes feel it from road bumps but not always. Call me crazy, but it occurs more frequently on hot days. When the outside temperature cools off, like in the evening, it seems to stop. Could the body mounts be that temperamental? Maybe I should move to Canada, eh?
I believe it’s the body mounts too but putting it in the shop ever nine months doesn't appeal to me. In the link to a previous posting AXTINC said they fixed a similar problem but I was hoping to get a more up-to-date resolution. Removing outside body panels and drilling larger access holes makes me very nervous. Do you know if there's a TSB on this problem yet?
To get to the cab mount bolts under your feet, you only have to remove the inner plastic kick panel and pull back the carpet. You will see a oblong rubber plug in the floor. Under this is the cab mount bolt. See if you can tighten it. I think if you have this problem always coming back then it is a design flaw. This is why Ford has no fix for it.
Though the dealer won't confirm it, I got word from the tech himself that Ford is aware of the problem, but they do not have a fix. They have tried a different mount, but ended up with the same result.
The tech showed me the mount. It comes in two parts. When under pressure, they lock together. The noise starts when the two metal parts wear unevenly, and a small gap starts. (according to the tech)
My noise is most noticeable when I go to pull in to my driveway, (I back in). As I turn to the right and stop to put it in reverse, it makes the noise. Also when I cross the curb, it does it. It also does it as I hit ripples in the road, going straight.
Very frustrating and annoying.
I hope this helps.
(truck in shop for day 9 now)
Yeah, the mount problem and another strange concern...A screeching noise that is primarily heard when the vehicle is cold. It is coming from under the vehicle, and is most noticeable when the tranny is at its shift points, but also when under very light acceleration. Push down hard on the fuel and it goes away. It started about 18K miles and has gotten worse to the point that I can get it to do it on command. The dlr thinks it is a heat shield, but that is not confirmed. I should know more by tomorrow.
Moving to Canada with a squeaking X? I doubt it. Immigration would not allow it.
If after tightening everthing in sight on the suspension, you still have the dreaded pooping, I think you have a cab mount problem.
There is hope. My CC stopped popping on its own toward the end of last winter. Mine did it primarily in cold weather so maybe I am a little premature. We will see when winter returns.
Since yours pops in hot weather and mine (did) in cold weather, maybe we should swap??
A follow up to previous posts, I cranked down the cab mount under the drivers feet and the clunk is less over most bumps. I also found the left front Edelbrock shock lost most of it's fluid. I have another on the way and will be interested to see if this helps.
