Power steering fluid leak...

My X is 1 year and 2 days old (from purchase) and has 18k miles (mostly freeway). Today, driving back from lunch, the power steering pump started making a groaning noise. I was near the dealer so I took it in. Saw fluid dripping out from under the engine compartment and had also soaked the top of my left front shock. Since it was at the dealer, and they didn't want it dripping on their 'new' garage floor, they immediately took it in back (without opening the hood). So I don't know if it was the pump, a hose, or what.

Just venting frustration... if I didn't like driving it so much, I'd probably be upset.

So far, in its first year, its been in for new front springs (no, unfortunately not upgraded), an oil leak, a brake pulling problem, and a missing license plate 'rivet'.

I hope after I get the bugs worked out of it, that I only have to take it in for oil changes for a while. Glad I got the ESP & warranty for the convenience later (not sure it was a good $$ investment).

Re: Power steering fluid leak...

May sound silly, but check for water in the resivouir(spelling?) I had an issue with that in my 97 PSD, and I think the pumps are identical. My 2 cents

As long as we are on the subject; anyone else with a noisy pump when cold?
At times it is much louder than the 7.3 I am sure as the temp goes down I will just have to get it replaced.

Re: Power steering fluid leak...

Dealer says its the power steering pump, and it needs to be replaced. Only problem is he supposedly ordered one, and when it was delivered to the dealer, it was the wrong one. By the time they ordered another one, it was to late to complete before the weekend. The dealership has about 50 (no joke) repair bays and they can't get a power steering pump installed in two days. I'm sure it's because there are better paying customers with problems (this is a warranty repair).

Very frustrating. No towing the boat this weekend..... oh wait, the '93 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 90k on it is still working, glad I haven't sold it yet..... didn't know I was keeping it around as a back-up for the X.....
