Well, I was sitting back and enjoying my good fortune of not have the steering while braking problem. Now the pump is whining and I had momentary loss of steering this morning. Its not very loud, but it was not there before, just 4k miles on the X. Hope it doesn't get worse.

Have you checked the fluid level? Mine was whining and I had read about the various tuned hoses and stuff and before taking it to the dealer I checked the fluid...and oops! It was pretty low. I topped it off and it's been quiet ever since. I love it when the fix is easy like that.

A friend just bought a F250 extended cab. In less than 3000 miles the serpentine belt gave out. If its at all loose it slips creating a weird whine, and especially when wet, you lose steering intermittently.. check the belt you may get lucky.. Easy fix..
