Preporator install/ fuel mods

Hi,
I am about to add an AirDog fuel preporator, and since I will be dropping the tank, I am wondering if there are any tips or other mods that I should do while I'm at it. Harpooning? Regulated fuel return? I've read other posts on the subject, but many are not Ex specific.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Preporator install/ fuel mods

If the tanks down do the In Tank Mod and the Harpoon is just cutting back the vent tube inside the tank,it helps with filling up and can benefit in putting in a gallon or two more fuel.

Re: Preporator install/ fuel mods

Had my tank out this week and the vent tube from the factory is only 1" long, so there was nothing to harpoon. The filler tube was about 5" and I cut it back to 2" but don't know if that accomplished anything. Did the mix valve delete while I was in there.
After reading the truck threads and not thinking about the excursion being different, I put 2 feet of hose on the tank and reinstalled it. That left me almost nothing to work with and I wished that I had used at least 3 feet, maybe more, but had to rush the job to get to work on time. If you are going from the tank to an air dog with hose, make sure you put enough length on it to reach your installation point before you stuff that tank back up.
Oh, one more thing...the tube coming off the tank (suction side)is 3/8" and the tube it connects to on the frame rail is 5/16", making for another opportunity for the fuel line to suck air. When I got it all done I realized I forgot to install the cheap temporary fuel filter on the end of that short piece of fuel line. Re: Preporator install/ fuel mods

At least you got the tank back up and on the road

I ran the hose from the top of the tank's pickup connection all the way to the pump and placing the prefilter about a foot prior to the pump, which reminds me time to pick up another inline filter

Re: Preporator install/ fuel mods

I knew I was going to have to either push the Excursion to work or drive my wife's Lexus RX300 (which I loath), so I just slapped it back together. Gotta deal with that 3/8 to 5/16 screw up this weekend.
My injectors are definitely quieter just rolling down the road though, so the air intrusion has decreased.

Re: Preporator install/ fuel mods

I harpooned both of my trucks. The Excursion tank is completely different in design, (for obvious reasons) but has more area that is raised than a the trucks. What I mean by raised is I completely cut the vent tube off, making it fluch with top of tank. Even then the tank has room for expansion because the tank has air pockets (high spots) in tank.

The F250 had a 5" vent tube (which I shortened to 1") which doesn't have high spots in tank like Excursion. If you completely cut off vent tube in Truck, it wouldn't have any air for fuel expansion. The Excursion appears to have more air space for expansion with no vent tube sticking down compared to the 1" in the truck. The X tanks is bigger an would need the added air space too. Am I making sense?

On the X, cut it off flush & get an extra 5 gallons of capacity & quicker fill to full.

I used 3/8's hose on the 5/16's metal line, added a small film of RTV sealant & triple clamped it. All metal lines are crimped (have a smaller hole in end from being cut) I flared the end's slightly for maximum flow. Then installed a clear fuel filter before fuel pump & have seen zero air come from tank.

Both trucks are quieter now.
