Question about vehicle security module replacement

I keep reading that the vehicle security module needs to be programmed by ford after replacement.

My question is, does anything work before the new VSM gets programed?

Right now we have no power locks, no keyless entry, radio stays on after exiting vehicle, automatic headlamps don't work, interior lights don't come on... so i don't think it will get much worse.

I'm asking because i plan on replacing ours this weekend, but likely won't be able to get it by the dealer for a few days.

The dealership replaced mine last year and except for the new security code for the touch pad nothing changed. They did not reprogram my keys as they only had one of them and both still work. The tech had to pull the dash out to access the VSM.

the dealer has to retreive the information from your old one first and then put it into your new one after its installed
