Real Test Drive

I had been of the pain medication for over 30 hours, so we all decided to take our new Excursion for its first real test run. I am very, very, very impressed. We took a 62 mile loop where 50 miles of the test ride was curvy, hilly, and single lane country roads, and the last 12 miles were highway to get us back home faster.

Did I say that we were impressed on how the Excursion handled? I thought I had a slight pull to the right when braking, but I'm not too sure now. None of the roads we were on were long enough to give me a good feeling for a good hard test brake.

The ride was as smooth as silk, even my wife was impressed on how smooth and comfortable she felt in the ride.

The truck did very well responding to each adjustment on the steering wheel. As for engine noise, here is our joint opinion. The engine noise inside the cabin was noticable, but not annoying. We turned off the radio and just let the 7.3L sing. Under acceleration, the engine was noticable, but once up to crusing speed, it wasn't noticable, very quiet. When giving a little throttle to get up a incline, response was fast and answered with all the power one could ask for. At highway, I couldn't tell what speed I was doing, same as on the road. I see a few speeding tickets in my future, if I don't take a bit more caution..

The TT Mirrors are Great. I love the convex lens and the fact that the passenger side mirror does not distort the image. What you see is what you get. (The way it should be) And BTW, for those of you who are still trying to figure out if the Power TT mirrors are heated, yes they are.

Re: Real Test Drive

MGiles,

Yep, it came assembled with the Reverse Senser Aid. And I can't believe how I ever would live without one. I like, it can be turned off, but each time the ignition is turned on, it is reset to be on.

The Reverse Sensing Aid has been on the production line since 2/21/2000.

Regards,
Ben

Re: Real Test Drive

Ben,

Would you describe a little how the reverse sensor works, and does anyone know who makes it for Ford? I'm starting a search for an add on system. Thanks

Did it actually come with the "Reverse Sen. Aid". The last I had heard, this option was still holding up production on special orders.

If it did, what is is your experience with it so far?

Re: Real Test Drive

tnostrant,

OK, here it goes:

When the vehicle is put into reverse, the four mounted sensors on the bumper are energized to that anything that comes into an area of about 6 feet from the rear bumper causes a beep noise that comes out one of the "D" pillars.

As you back up, the closer you get the faster the beeps get until your about 3 inchs away, and the beep turns into a solid tone. If you keep backing up at this point, you may have a real surprise!

There is a switch next to ESOF knob to turn off the sensor for when trailering. But the switch needs to be turned off each time the vehicle is turned on. It is preset to be on at all times.

Hope this helps,

Regards,
Ben

Re: Real Test Drive

tnostrant,

If you ordered a LIMITED than you should have the 76R option as standard equipment on LIMITEDs built after 2/21/00. This is my understanding for the boys in Detroit the last time I talked to them.

Regards,
Ben

Re: Real Test Drive

I wonder if they will ever offer this as an add-on through Ford. I wish I had ordered it. My Excursion was built week of 2/28, so I think I might have been ablt to make it happen without a hang-up.

Re: Real Test Drive

Unfortunately Ben, my Excursion is spelled XLT. I made that allowance so I could also spell it PSD!

Re: Real Test Drive

tnostrant,

I understand, I did the same thing, but I managed to squeeze out the extra $208 for the 76R option. I did see several nice aftermarket reverse sensors that I was going to buy so that I could drop the option on the Excursion and get it built much faster. But I am glad I waited.

The price I remember for the nice aftermarket versions was about $200-$250. So price is not far off from what FORD is charging.

Regards,
BEn
