Rear AC leaking?

Well, not leaking -- we just returned from a 30-hour driving trip and when we got there, I noticed that the carpet in the cargo area was wet-ish. I thought maybe the dog had spilled water, so I let it dry and kept an eye on it.

On the way home, the carpet got wet again and the dog didn't get any water this time.

So... where's the drain for the AC condensor... and has anyone had it plug up on them?

Re: Rear AC leaking?

OK, lets try this a different way... does the rear AC have it's own condensor and heat exchanger or does it run off the front?

58 views... someone MUST have an idea!

Re: Rear AC leaking?

On the 2003, the front and rear share the same compressor, accumulator (receiver/dryer), and condenser (basically, everything in the engine compartment), but have their own evaporators. The front evap is at the firewall, and the rear evap is in the back on the passenger side (behind the removable panel where the jack hangs out).

I expect that the '05 is the same.

I haven't looked to see how condensate from the rear evap gets routed, but that's certainly a possible source for the water in the back.

I think that the tank for the rear wiper/washer is also back there somewhere, but I've never looked at the manual to find out precisely where.

Re: Rear AC leaking?

Awesome, thanks. I'll have a look at it and see if I can figure it out.

My washer fluid comes from the front tank, no tank in the rear.

Re: Rear AC leaking?

look up behind the right rear finder and you will see the condensate drain next to the refrigerant lines going up to the evaporator.

Re: Rear AC leaking?

ok mine did this new in 01. Look at the naked lines that should be wrapped with black gooey insulation. you probably have sweat coming off the uninsulated portions as I did. Went down to the AC shop and asked for black gooey stuff and he gave about 3 ft for free. Bam, no more wet, mildewed stuff in the storage area. I did this in 01 and have not one drop of water since.

good luck

Re: Rear AC leaking?

Funny I was just looking at mine and I am in the same boat. Although I did put black goopy stuff around some but not all. I guess you need to do both lines coming out of the evap., the gold block and the one line on the right(in my case) to completely stop it?? Was cleaning the truck and noticed some wet things too. I wonder why they didn't do this from the factory?? Oh almost forgot it's a ford!!!
Another thing I noticed while trying to determine where the water was coming from is that the heater hoses are hot(??). Does this have any effect on the cooling we are trying for in the summer???? Inquiring mind (me) would like to know.

Thanks,

Paul B

Re: Rear AC leaking?

yes cover all lines. it won't hurt anthing and hot water runs through out heater lines all the time. if you do the heater mods (2 or 3 choices) and insulate the cooler lines under the truck it will stop the heat and you will see 7-12 degree cooler AC air.
always remember we do drive furds!!

Go to Bob Riley's site http://www.dieselsite.com and look around. He has the item and instructions listed.
Basically just cutting the flow of hot coolant off to the coils.
