Rear caliper location?? - Diesel Forum

I was looking at a used 2000 X LTD for a friend and I noticed the rear calipers were were both mounted towards the rear of the axle.
On my 2000 X LTD, the driver side caliper is on the front side of the axle and the pass. side is on the backside.
This seems rather odd.....
Anyone know why they would stagger them?
Which way is really better?

Both X's are 4x4 PSD's
My X was an early 2000 build and the other was in June.

The 1999 to early 2000 vehicles had the staggered calipers. This was done as an effort to reduce inventory costs as only one caliper is used for both sides, as Ford has done on other vehicles. Under off road conditions, it was found that the front mounted caliper would trap too much sand within the assembly, so the design was switched to both rear.
