Rear Diff./Pinion Seal?

OK, I'm under the X while doing the WW install this weekend and I notice fluid has blown onto rear underneath of X. On muffler, front of rear axle, back side of hubs, etc. Looks like it may have come from my rear pinion area...just in front of rear diff. where drive shaft goes into pinion? I noticed a very small spot a few months ago when I changed my VSS. How do I top off the rear diff. fluid? Do I have to go in through the VSS plug? There is a plug with a socket square fitting on the drivers side of the pumpkin about 1/2 way to 3/4 of the way up...is this the drain plug or fill plug or neither??? I really just want to check the fluid level before I get into big dollars to fix the pinion seal!! Is the rear diff. fluid flowing in the pinion area? Can someone explain this part/area to me and how I deal with my rerar diff. and fluid??

Re: Rear Diff./Pinion Seal?

yes the fluid you are seeing is rear end fluid.

the plug you see with the square hole is the fill plug, a 3/8 ratchet and extension fit it perfect, rear ro be filled with gear oil until it comes back out the hole...

it seems to be a common problem with the x's for the pinion seal to leak...

Re: Rear Diff./Pinion Seal?

As long as I make sure I keep fluid level up back there will it generally be safe to drive it for a while like it is? I do not hear any gears and the X is running and shifting fine. I just spent a big chunk on intake, WW, AIH mod, gauges so I'm trying to wait a little while before dropping any more dough!!! I will not be towing anything heavy either...just everyday driving. Whatcha think honestly?

Re: Rear Diff./Pinion Seal?

I would keep an eye on the fluid level and you should be fine for a while. Remember the fluid is a sythentic ($) 75W-140 gear oil if I remeber correctly.

Hope this helps,

Re: Rear Diff./Pinion Seal?

I would get it fixed as soon as you can. I have found in the past that these pinion seals go from weaping to dripping very quickly, not to mention the mess. I found a shop in San Diego called Pro Gear that specializes in off-road vehicle diffs and transfer cases and had it done for $91. The stealer wanted a little over $200 as I recall. Look for a 4x4 shop as this type of fix is their "bread and butter" and the pricing is usually better. Also I have a Mag-hy-tec cover and when I installed the cover I set the fluid level to the middle of the dipstick with the vehicle on level ground. Then I checked it a few months later using the diff check plug and found that quite a bit of oil came out. If you have a hy-tec cover and set the level with the dipstick you might have it overfilled. It is possible that this condition caused my seal to fail early at 45k but others with the factory setup have had them fail early too.

Re: Rear Diff./Pinion Seal?

I was told by a mechanic friend that this is not just in the X the other fords with the same rear end have this problem also. I replaced my own seal it was not a hard task to do and have had no leaks for about six months now. I was thinking it was going to be a pain so I kept adding oil till I couldn't stand the gear lube smell any more. I was told that the part that the seal rubs agenst can form a gruve and that mite need to be replaced but mine was fine.

Re: Rear Diff./Pinion Seal?

How did you do it? What kind of tools do you need? I hate paying the stealer.
