Dealer told me on Saturday, that 'a rear oil seal went out'. The previous day I had noticed oil drips on the driveway and figured my usual dealer didn't tighten the drain plug enough (again) because it had a lot of oil on/around it. But I was perplexed since the oil change had occurred 3 weeks previously (I have them do the changes as part of the pre-paid maintenance plan). The next day (after 80 mile commute) I noticed a lot more oil. Again, I crawled under the X and couldn't locate a leak (drain plug was secure), but noticed quite a bit more oil in locations that couldn't have come from the drain plug, like on the top & side of tranny housing and streaks that went back along the underside of the vehicle. The oil was dark, obviously engine oil.
Anyway, I decided I wanted to try a new dealer and there was one open on Saturday that advertised having a truck center. The service rep called and left a voicemail saying I had a leak at an oil seal. It is warranty.
BTW, I checked my oil level before driving, and it was down to the lowest 'ok' mark on dipstick.
Anyone else experience this at 66,000 miles? Seems premature to me.

Dealer called and said it was the rear main oil seal...
Seems odd as they fixed it already (1/2 day) and seems like that job would take longer. Anyway, between this, the front spring replacement, and two hydraulic power (steering/brakes), I'm starting to think the extended warranty may pay off after all (major services/repairs since 36k miles).

I just started noticing some oil spots on my driveway (77K miles). It's coming from the area that may also be a rear main seal. Guess I'll take it in. I would think the standard engine warranty would cover it should it be the rear seal?
my x has also started to leak at the rear main,it has 80k, i don't think i will fix it, probly have other trouble after the dealer fixes the leak, so leave well enough alone.

I'm with you, if they open this up to fix it there are way too many things they can screw up. If it gets supper bad I will do it and know it was done right.

I'd bet a 100.00 bucks that it is NOT a rear main seal but the infamous turbo "o" rings. It leaks onto the manifold and down the left rear of the block where it mates to the tranny bellhousing and comes out of the weep hole in the inspection plate "appearing" to be a rear main seal...

i had the same exact problem on mine about 2 years ago, mine ended up being a dirty air filter, causeing the engine to suck more crankcase fumes then normal,
it looked like it was leaking at rear main also
i now change my filter on a consistant basis

While changing my oil a couple months ago I too noticed oil all over the back of the engine block and on the underside of the vehicle. After reading these forums for a couple years, I figured it just HAD to be something major, right? Disappointed that I was having problems at only 38k miles, I rush into my Ford Truck dealer. Well, two hours later it's fixed - it was only leaking turbo boots. They took the boots off, cleaned the oil out of the inside and reinstalled them.
I just gotta do that CCV mod......when the weather warms up!

Interesting. When I was under the X, I saw the hydraulic lines and thought it could be leaking from one of them (it was creating a large oil spot under the truck) but I couldn't see 'squirting' or the real source.
I wouldn't doubt that, that is actually what was fixed and the shop still kept 'replace rear oil seal' to match the diagnosis. It was a warranty fix so I didn't even question it.
The good news is, no more leak or drips, and I think it even runs better (sort of like how much better it runs after I've detailed it).
Thanks for all the input.
