I am looking to buy a 2004 ford excursion that has rear buckets. I was wanting to know if I can buy a bench seat and if it will bolt right in place of the bucket seats? anyone know? Thanks for your help in advance.

Yep, it will bolt right in. If you prefer the bench to the buckets, you can always find someone who is willing to swap. I'm guessing there is someone on this board who would like to have the buckets instead of the bench.

Will the '04 seats work in an earlier model year? Like '01? I have a buddy that wants buckets. He'd trade you and probably pay shipping both ways I'm guessing, if you wanted to trade. PM me if you want to entertain that idea.
HUH? Are you sure about that, as in seen the bolt patterns?

I second Family Ride's concern. When I bought my X I was planning to order with the 2nd row captain's chairs and work a deal to get a bench seat separate for when I needed to ferry around 8 people. The dealership had an X with each set up in stock so I was able to check them out side by side. Sure did not look like they would be a direct swap. I decided to order the bench and abandon my two seat plan.
I am sure you can modify an X for either seat choice but the mounting for each is different.

To be perfectly honest, I cannot say for absolute certainty that the swap is a direct replacement. I based my opinion on what I have read in this and other forums. Here is a fairly recent thread that discussed the same issue: Seat swap

My understanding is that you will have to drill out the holes for the an additional support when going from the bench to the buckets. Otherwise, they can be swapped out.
