Rear view mirror question?

Anyone know if there is a way to keep the rear view mirror from always defaulting to auto dim? I have an 05 limited and everytime the headlights are on the little green light on the rear view mirror is lit and the mirror is darkened. Does Ford really expect other vehicles headlights to blind you from behind? About the only thing with headlights that high are trucks and that is just barely.

Thanks,

Re: Rear view mirror question?

Hi,

My 04 has a push button on the bottom center of the mirror which allows it to be turned on or off.

I use it a lot at night on the interstate and it helps a lot on long trips lessening eye strain.

Good luck

I always dim my mirror at night. I also try to get the idiots that run fog lights at night toward oncoming traffic to turn the &%#^#$ things off!
Knowing what I know about the eyes and cataracts you young guys wouldn't run those fog lights either

Re: Rear view mirror question?

I know about the switch on the rear view mirror....I was wondering if there was a way to get it to default to off, instead of on? It gets annoying to have to push the button everytime.

Thanks,

Re: Rear view mirror question?

I haven't found any situation where it needs to be off. It works really well. I leave mine alone.

What get's me are the putz's that flip high and low beams to look cool (I know, I did it back in 1983 on my 1984 Silverado) but they don't bother to "ADJUST" the lights!!! So they run around with 2 headlights adjusted up into people faces.

Or how about the ones that won't replace a burned out low beam so they drive with high beams on???? GEEZ, Back in the late 80's I got pulled over for alegedly running with high beams on in traffic (I was driving a demo., first year Chev. Beretta with those bright hal. bulbs). Where's those cops now?

<deep cleansing breath> I'm ok, I'll get off the headlight soapbox now.

Re: Rear view mirror question?

You know FR when we travel at night and some knuclehead is going down the highway with their brights on or they are totally out of adjustment we comment that they're "Looking for Squirrels"

I always loved it when someone would come up behind me with their brights on then I'd flash on-off real quick (6) 55watt takedown lights at em,that turns off the brights and they drop back about 1/4 mile
I don't recommend anyone doing that tho

They are retired like me! That was my pet peeve,I would hammer people for failing to dim their lights.I had some jackass following me last week with the lights flipped in a chevy 1500,I told him his high beams where on and he said that it was his low beams.I was madder than a wet hornet and told him "What are you some kind of j/o?"He took off right quick. Re: Rear view mirror question?

Chris,

I don't know the answer to your question. I would like to suggest that I have learned something that has improved my night driving vision tremendously. I could never figure out why anyone needed a dimmer on the interior dash lights. Then a friend (a pilot) told me that if you dim down your interior lights and flip your rear view mirror (or use the auto dim feature) and let your eyes adjust, you will improve your ability to see out at night. I tried it and it made a huge difference. I dim my interior lights down to just above what I need to see the gauges and use the auto dim feature. Once you do this and give it a chance, try going back to full dash lights and no dim on the rear view mirror and it is amazing how much less you see outside. I hate when someone uses a post with a straight forward question to lecture people so please excuse me!! (But try it)

My 2004 has a 2 position push button. In locks to on and out locks to off. Mine stays off until I turn it on unless I left it on when I last used my lights. Perhaps you have a bad switch and it is not locking correctly ? OR a different type switch that never locks ??

Re: Rear view mirror question?

Must be different.....my mirror has a "soft" push button that defaults to on whenever you cycle the ignition. I was wondering if there was something in the Ford programing, like the reverse sensing system, that could be changed to default off, instead of on.

Thanks,
