rebuild of fuel filter bowl, water drain lever ???

well after 5 years of trouble free opertion i have my first problem,

my 2000 XLT 7.3 is stored in doors and keep warm so ice should not be an issue,

here is the story

yesterday ( saturday ) did and oil change and fuel filter and air filter change on my X

everything went well as usualy, and turned the lever on the fuel filter bowl to drain any contamination or water out of bottom of bowl...turned the lever back to the closed position and has not stop leaking since...

it is not a big leak just a constant drip, more so with running ( fuel pressure ) and slight drip while not running till it empties the fuel bowl

has anyone had to rebuld the lever unit yet, i would assume just an O-ring in there just not sure how comes apart or do i need to purchase a complete fuel filter housing

Re: rebuild of fuel filter bowl, water drain lever ???

well got lucky, being i am super cheap. i figured i would pull the valve off and see if i could find rings locally.

pulled off and turned o-rings over and no leaks...

you could see where rings were worn by the check valve on one side

Okay way cool,leak problem resolved

Re: rebuild of fuel filter bowl, water drain lever ???

That's good news. If they're at all like the o-rings in my faucets that will only fix it temporarily. (it's how I fix a dripping faucet). Seems like I get 3-6 months out of them when I do that and then I have to put in new one's.

Just my .02

Regards,
Dave

Re: rebuild of fuel filter bowl, water drain lever ???

well the big difference between a faucet and this is that the bowl drain lever gets used very little and faucet is used daily...

i am hoping it lasts for while, lasted 5 yrs so far,

That is true. I only open/close mine once a month.

Have a good one,
Dave

Maybe I should check em once a month myself instead of once every 6 months when the oil change is done.

Re: rebuild of fuel filter bowl, water drain lever ???

I don't know if it's a good idea or bad one, but I saw that they were doing it on the Turtle Expedition trucks so I figured it couldn't hurt. I just do it as part of my monthly check of air pressure, etc.

Have a good one,
Dave

I have not had the assembly apart to check that valve to see if it can be lubricated with silicone of something alike without disassembling, what do you think?

Re: rebuild of fuel filter bowl, water drain lever ???

mine didn't looked lubed, but the o rings were painted yellow, not sure what the idea was on that, some of the paint actually flaking off of the o-rings, thought maybe that may have caused the problem,

2 days now, no leaks still diesel smell,

to cold here to wash truck underside and engine, wait a few weeks till warms up...

Re: rebuild of fuel filter bowl, water drain lever ???

You'd think they'd be "self-lubing" with diesel fuel up against them wouldn't you?

I've got no clue. I'm probably going to order one of those rebuild kits though and stash it in the same place as the CPS and spare fuel filters!

Have a good one,
Dave

Re: rebuild of fuel filter bowl, water drain lever ???

From the sounds of it the O-rings are partially exposed to open air and if you're in the southwest it's dry so i can see the lifespan of them alot shorter.

I may have to give them a looksee if I can get any WD40,silicone spray or somethin in there.

At least one of the sponsors has the rebuild kit for us
