I recently fixed my passenger side rear vent window, hadn't worked since I got my 2003 Excursion back in 2007. I knew the switch on the overhead console was good because I could hear a click from the motor when pressing the switch.
The passenger side trim panel removes very easily, it is held on with steel clips that release if you carefully pry the panel away from the body. The motor is held on with 3 8mm bolts. The tricky part is getting the motor freed from the folding mechanism, the part of the mechanism that is directly connected to the motor shaft has two points on it that are clips that must be gently pried outwards at the same time.
The motor/gearbox assembly appears to be permanently sealed but you can carefully pry off the back cover plate to expose the gearbox and remove the motor. The gearbox is actually pretty beefy, all gears and shafts are steel and look to be very well made, unlike some power window motors. GOOD TIP HERE : Mark the orientation of the indexed main shaft/gear set as it will make life easier when reassembling and reattaching the motor/gearbox to the folding mechanism.
I got lucky and found that my motor either had a stuck brush or something caused the gearbox to bind because after I completely disassembled the gearbox and reassembled the gearbox everything worked fine. I didn't reseal the back cover plate as I think it should be fine since the assembly is bolted to the body of the Excursion and should hold together.
