Looking to go off-off-off road and would like to carry a couple of spare tires and some fuel so I need a roof rack with high capacity and durability. What is the best and who got them? TIA.
Try http://www.defenderracks.com/ . Con-Ferr went out off business( http://www.con-ferr.com/ )and they are now taking over were Con-Ferr left. Below is the new roof rack they are making. Looks to be just as good as Con-Ferr was making.
Ford Fullsize 99-05 Excursion w/fac roof rack 3.5' x 6' PART #35604 DS2-8 (I think you might could go wider than 3.5'??)
I have a Con-Ferr and have had it LOADED down. NO question, it is strong. I use it to carry my 35" spare. Have had a canoe and two mountain bikes up top and gear. All at 70 plus MPM. I have the 6" tall by 4' wide by 5' long. The 4" tall seems to small for our trucks. The 4" tall looks way to small with a 35" tire up top. I have had my Con-Ferr for about 6-7 years now. Hope that Defender Racks is as good as Con-Ferr, by looking at the pictures on there web site, it looks to be good! Only problem is I just looked over Defender Racks part #'s and ALL thier racks are 4" tall only??

I use to have a Con-ferr rack on my 2000 Excursion and liked it. Too bad they went out of business. Looks like the Defenders are almost twice the price.
I've been looking at the Thule & Yakima 21 cu ft cargo boxes. Seems like they would be cheap, flimsy & easily cracked. For $500 + are they worth it, or is there a better option?
I've been thinking about a hitch platform too. Then mounting a large plastic Gangbox, toolbox as an alternative to the roof rack cargo box.

I added a custom wind deflector that is also black powder coated to eliminate wind noise. I can take some pictures for you and post it. I was actually thinking of selling it as I no longer need it. Not sure yet though as you never know when you need something like this. I also have the large land anchor and mount and a custom box I had made for storage. Anyway, its a good rack and you you can get all the accessories you are looking for. I will take a picture for you tonight.
Just a note that without a wind deflector you will get some whistling with any rack and the stuff you are talking about adding.

Re: Best roof rack and Cargo Box, where to get them?
I've been using the Thule 21 ft Evolution carrier for 5 years with absolutely no problem. Into Canada during the winter and in Florida in the Summer. Never a leak and no noticeable wind noise.
Whatever system you choose be sure to plan ahead for a small step ladder to access whatever you put up there. Especially in the snow and ice. It can be a reach.

Excellent info, I look forward to the pictures. Also, what is this custom cargo box? Sounds interesting. Thanks!

Re: Best roof rack and Cargo Box, where to get them?
The cargo box is about 2.5'x2'x10" to store chains, tow straps, clevis, etc. and I placed it in the back passenger side corner of the rack. I took the pictures but am waiting for the wife to download for me.
