First, I would like to thank everyone in this forum for their input. In October, I purchased a 2000 Excursion (0.9% financing is hard to beat) and think it's a great vehicle.

Before I drove it off the lot, I removed the factory roof rack, since I had read that it rubs through the paint. I replaced the rack with a Thule roof rack and I wanted to let everyone know that it is, IMHO, the best way to go. It mounts to the factory rails using their TK1 fit kit. Add the 430 Tracker II feet and 58" bars and you're ready to go. Once you mount it the first time, you can easliy remove it by pushing a button and lifting it off on each side. All that is left on the roof is the fit kit (about 1-1/4" high). Since the X is so tall, the Thule setup is easier to attach/remove than the Yakima/Ford design. I use the rack to mount a large basket when I need extra room and since it's easy to take on and off, I can still fit in my garage when I don't need the rack.

How much did it cost and where did you get it?

Re: Roof Rack

I have the exact same setup. I ordered mine from www.sportsrack.com and paid less than $200 for the entire package including 4 locks.
I was pleasantly surprised to find the X will still fit in my garage with the Thule rack system on - barely!!
I have noticed some wind noise. I may purchase the fairing available to reduce the noise.
This system is very strong. I have Thule bike carriers and could probably fit 5 bikes up there. I am planning to buy a Thule cargo box that holds 16 cu ft and should be able to put the box and 2-3 bikes on top at the same time. The only catch is I need a 6-8 ft step ladder to get to everything!

Re: Roof Rack

The base rack setup with locks is $187. Most local sporting goods stores carry Thule racks and they are available online from REI.com and SportsRack.com. REI has free shipping until 12/15. Once you have the base setup, you can purchase the mounts you need to carry everything from bikes, canoes, and skis to luggage boxes.

Thule.com is the manufacturer's website and lists everything available to mount on the racks.
