Re: Roof Rack and other problems....ADVICE

Someone mentioned the windows clicking, I had my rear driverside window in the cargo area fall out and was just hanging by the hinges. The very large window is held in place by a black gooy substance(nice). I have 9500 on mine so I should check the roof rack out, I only have used it once when we hauled our xmas tree.

Re: Roof Rack and other problems........VIBRATION CAUSED BY ROOF RACK ???

Hello from Corpus Christi,

As previously reported, my roof rack is off replaced by Thule cargo rack and load bars. No chance for the Thule to scratch the paint as it rides a good two inches above the roof, seems sturdy too.

Everyone who has been experiencing VIBRATION problems at highway speeds shold take a look at their roof racks. The factory luggage rack IS moving around up there at 70 and 80 mph (hence the scratches). The factory rack could telegraph a vibration through the body of the X. The main cargo bars are shaped kinda like airplane wings and they could be trying to lift off. This is only a theory, but removing the roof rack only takes 5 minutes and the cost is FREE!!

I just ran up to Austin at 80 mph and the X was smooth as glass.

Take care all, Raven 222
gotta go launch the boat!!

Are you guys leaving the to large crossbars and just removing the four small ones? Or do the large ones cause damage also?

The two large end one are the trouble. (front and rear) the smaller ones are okay.

It's the big sliding ones. Slide them to the ends and there's a way to get them out of the tracks.

Re: Roof Rack and other problems........VIBRATION CAUSED BY ROOF RACK ???

Has the roof rack design changed for 2003? I had to have my roof repainted at Ford's cost at 7000 miles. At that time the dealer told me that the problem had been reported and their engineers were working on a solution. A year and a half later I still don't have a working roof rack on a $38,000 truck. I can't believe that Ford would rather repaint every Excursion than fix the problem.

Re: Roof Rack and other problems........VIBRATION CAUSED BY ROOF RACK ???

Well for what it worth...I thought I'd add my experiences.

I usually run with my roof rack off. It is very easy to remove as the small ones unscrew off and the large ones just slide (although not easily) to either end and lift off.

However, while travelling I put my spare tire up there. (I made a mount using the existing roof rack.) To keep it fron scratching I use the SOFT side of industrial strength Velcro (Available at Wal-Mart) and put it on the bottom of the bars where it lines up with the raised section on the roof. Cheap fix. Plus the large ones slide alot easier when it comes time to remove them.
