Rough idle when first starting

Does anyone else have a fairly rough idle when first cranking their Ex? Sometimes it will last for 5 minutes and sometimes longer. I usually have to push the throttle to the floor once and let a large puff of black smoke exit the exhaust before it idle correctly again. I thouhgt that it might have something to do with the air/fuel ratio but i really have no idea......any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Rough idle when first starting

Part of what you're describing is as if you're talking about a gas motor, but I'm pretty sure it's not.

It would help to know more about what you have, what changed since the time that it didn't do it, etc. That would at least be a good start.

FYI, stabbing the throttle of a diesel when you first crank it up cold isn't the best thing to do. A diesel needs heat and needs to be driven easy if you're taking off while it's still prety much bone colda dn the EOT (oil temp) hasn't started coming up.

Re: Rough idle when first starting

It's a 2000 model with a 7.3 It had a banks powerpack, big hoss level 4 chip, k&n FIPK air filter, superchips micro-tuner, shift kit, muffler bypass, transmission, torque converter and a few other minor engine mods. I always let it warm up first before i do that with the throttle and i dont always have to do that to corect the miss the engine has...sometimes as it is warming up it will fix itself, but probably 2/3 of the time it doesnt. Between my dad and I we have over 30 diesels and 14 of them are powerstrokes. This is the only one that does anything like this. Thanks for letting me know about the cold start though.

Re: Rough idle when first starting

Is it extremely cold where you're at when it does this or does it do it all the time? Mine was like that in the winter until I switched to Delvac 1 (5w-40).

Regards,
Dave

Re: Rough idle when first starting

Could it be the EBV(exhust back pressure valve) sticking?? This is activated on cold engines to aid in faster warm up.

Re: Rough idle when first starting

I live in Southwest Virginia. Temps are usually anywhere from 22-45 when starting. We thought that the oil might be doing it, so we switched from 15w40 to diesel synthetic 10w30 and it didnt make much difference with that problem. It did however lower idle RPMs and quieten idle chatter.
