Re: rust

Many take the cross bars off to prevent them from rubbing through the paint. I think the warranty only covers rust-through.

Re: rust

I htink there was a TSB on the rack isuebut the solution was to put a clear vinyl protective film on it. Either way, if it is the rack, you may have a chance to get some help with it from Ford. Is it rust on the surface? Or metal actuall rusted throuhg the paint?

it is 5X5 cm around the screw.

i am waiting for a answer from ford on it.

there are only 2 pepole that make this disisjon in norway.

Re: rust

You're in Norway so the laws are much different but to say becasue you haven't had regular service done my the dealer they will deny a warranty claim for a hole rusted in your roof, sounds like someone in Norway has been recieving packages from Colombia and consuming the contents.

I would push it if it is indeed a factory rack that has caused a rust through the roof panel wihtout any modification.

Rereading above, I do not believe he stated it was rust thru the metal. Thus no warranty. I know the roof rack has caused many problems and you would think for would fix it for a reduced amount.

Re: rust

My bad. He said it was just through the paint. I'd be concerned that if it's the roof that's rusting through the paint, it's going to rust through soon. If it's the screw that rusted and the paint was compromised, After getting rid of the screw issue, I'd see if you could clean up the paint then protect it.

Without seeing it, it's a tough call.

Re: rust

I have a black 2000 X with 187000 miles, just a bit out of warantee. The roof paint has blistered in many spots and the paint comes off with the primer right down to metal.

Roof racks are off. The problem is all over the roof. It is my theory that since paint is water based the heat combined with black paint boils the existing water out the paint thus making it blister. The other explanation may be the roof flexing due to its massive size.

Ford says it is way out of warantee and will offer no help. I have been using rustoleum (sp?) and it will prevent it from rusting through.

Sorry should have got a pimp white vehicle.

Re: rust

use por15 to kill rust the por15 tite coat to make regular paint bond to it.

Doing servive on your vehicle should have nothing to do with the paint warranty

Water based paint does suck. Paint adhesion failures is exactly why we went back to solvent based paint about a year ago in my shop at Boeing. Stipping parts is nasty-
"Pimp white" is what I bought and after reading this thread I'm glad I did.

I will bet your problem is excessive paint film build. Ford had to buy my truck back because of this same problem. The roof and hood of my truck was blistering right down to the metal just like yours. Upon further investigation we measured the paint with a Mil(paint thickness)guage. Ford specs for a paint job is between 3-5 mils. My truck had 12-17 mils The only thing to do is a complete strip to bare metal and repaint. Double check the warranty. Rust thru is 7 yrs and unlimited mileage. Show Ford the bare metal and remind them of warranty maybe they will bend.
