The sad truth about Excursion $$$

So there I went, to Mark Pirtle Ford, in Shelbyville, Tennessee---I was considering trading my 2K X PSD on a 2001 SD----they didn't want to inventory the X, so they started calling all the high end wholesalers in the region, which includes Nashville (a lot of uptown wholesalers there)---the dealership "owed" me a favor, as they sold a vehicle out from under me, claiming the salesman didn't I was working a deal---- the used car mgr came to me sheepishly, and told me that best offer they had was 29K---the dealership was going to subsidize and add another 3500, bringing me to 32.5K---for a 2000 X PSD with 3500 miles on it!!!! That's the worst hit I've ever taken on a car, and I've owned 'em all!!!!
I think the Excursion is a wonderful vehicle, but softer than soft, as they say!!! Enjoy yours, my friends, but do yourselves a favor, and plan on keeping it for a long time!!!!!

Re: The sad truth about Excursion $$$

I had the same basic thing happen to me last night on my 99 SD. I'm too pi$$ed to even post what the ba$tards offered. I walked out.

That dealer won't see me again.

Re: The sad truth about Excursion $$$

Aces,

Sounds like you got a keeper if you're going to get your money's worth. I bought for the long haul. My next SUV is going to be hydrogen powered (not a fuel cell either)!!!
Fortunately, you got a good car to go the long haul with. Enjoy.

BTW: You were given dealer wholesale prices, plus you are trying to sell a fuel guzzler when people are worried about fuel prices and availability. Car prices went wacky in 1974 and 1980 too when fuel was an issue.

Re: The sad truth about Excursion $$$

Hey guys, that is why I paid for the 6yr 100,000 mi Ford warranty.I knew all full size SUV's would get hurt by high fuel prices. But I noticed the biggest discount listed in the dealer ads in NJ on Excursions are on the ones with 5.4 v8 gas engines. One in todays paper was $9000 off...but it was a 2 wheel drive Limited with 5.4 V8 with 5,000+ demo miles...a used slug.

Re: The sad truth about Excursion $$$

If anyone is still looking for a new 2000 EX, Randall Reed Ford in Houston in discounting $10K below MSRP & .9% financing on all Excursions, PSD's, 4x4's etc. With deals like that for new Ex's I can understand why the trade in value is low right now. I purchased mine for the long haul, struck the best deal at the time and still enjoy driving it after 8300 miles. I just can't understand why Diesel is more expensive than regular unleaded when diesel is the least expensive fuel to refine by far.

Re: The sad truth about Excursion $$$

You're right PoloBr---and the good news is, now I'm gonna keep this big beast for a long long time! Time for guages, and a lift, and bigger wheels, and tires, PIAAs, WD Brake, WD Air Ram, and on, and on, ....................ammortized over the life of the vehicle, those things will seem cheap........at least I'll tell myself that! Watch my signature start to grow!!!

Re: The sad truth about Excursion $$$

They're all (dealers) the same. I've been shopping for an Excursion myself and I was offered $7000 trade on my 96 conversion van. The van, stripped bare, with the 90,000 miles it has, is worth $11,000 wholesale. Now add back in an $8000 conversion. . . .

When dealers meet at the auctions, they talk "x thousands back of book." American luxury cars, full sized SUV's, Ford Taurus, Toyota Camry, minivans, etc. All of these to for $2000 to $6000 "back of book." I'ved been spoiled. If I can't go with a dealer to an auction, I'll never be able to buy a used car again. The official wholesale price is never seen. Any vehicle nice enough to pull full low book at a dealer only auction wouldn't be there in the first place.

Where were all you guys when I started the post asking about Excursion resale vs. pickup resale? I guess I should have put it here instead of in the "Ordering" forum. Maybe I'll get the pickup instead!!! Anyway, you guys confirmed some of my fears. However, I would still feel okay buying one at $10K off sticker.

Re: The sad truth about Excursion $$$

Well, after all that dissappointment w/the trade-in value of the EX, I decided to keep it, and XMAS came early, as the little woman now drives the X, and I just got another PSD, as you can see on the signature!!!! Ain't life grand!!!!

Re: The sad truth about Excursion $$$

Glen in Den -

I shopped all over Colorado, including Burt. The best I could get them to do was $300 over invoice. I got a much better deal across town at Courtesy Ford. I believe I beat the Burt deal by $1000 or maybe $1500. If you want to give me an e-mail, I will give you the guy to contact over at Courtesy to get the new vehicle as cheaply as possible.

Re: The sad truth about Excursion $$$

Legal, thanks anyway but I'm going to pass. I rolled the dice on the incentive getting better and I lost. I don't feel bad, an EX is not exactly what I wanted anyway. If they would have made the incentive better, I would have taken the plunge.

Roller, thanks for the tip but Burt just wouldn't admit to selling any EX at 10k off sticker. I spoke to the guy who's name you gave me and he flat out denied it. Typical! They told me I could have it at invoice. That's only about 6K off. An admirable discount under normal circumstances.

John Pahl, Texas was a bust. Lots of talk but when I tried to make the rubber hit the road, they couldn't produce. They back-peddled, hemmed, hawed, he-hawed, whatever. After I said "I'll take the red one" they put me on hold. When Sean came back on the line he said the sale was over last week and he just now found out." How do these guys sleep? Long drive from Denver anyway.

Best deal was around $8500 off sticker, no trade allowed. That put me at about $38,000. Again, an amazing discount but it just didn't push me over the edge. Even when I factored in the huge savings from the .09 financing I felt I might take a bath since I was only planning on keeping it for 2 or 3 years (my dream SUV is the diesel Expedition). I can buy a PSD 4x4 Lariat crew cab for 2 grand less and it would be a 2001. That's the way I'm probably going to go.

A friend of mine, he's a salesman in a "lousy for discounting" Ford dealer, told me he didn't see Ford continuing the Excursion beyond 2001. The dealers don't even want to floor them. I believe they would be smart to put one demo in each showroom and make it an order only car. Imagine your used values if they did that or even discontinued it! Couldn't hurt!

You folks may have a wonderful collector's item on your hands! Take care of it!

Good luck! I'm going to slither back to the pickup section. I've already started accessorizing in my head!

Glenn in Den.

Re: The sad truth about Excursion $$$

Man, the more stories like this I read, the happier I am that I did not take the plunge on the X and stuck with the Crew Cab. Truely amazing what bad press and high fuel prices will do to a decent vehicle. I bet the greenies are just smiling from ear to ear on this one.
