Same ole' subject---BIGGER TIRES

Having just gone w/550 springs, and 4" blocks in rear, how big can I go w/tires, without rubbing?? I'd love to get 315/75/16's if they'll fit.

Also, for any of you who've gone w/that size tire, did you enter an RPM value of 600 to callibrate the speedometer??

Thanks,

Re: Same ole' subject---BIGGER TIRES

I just ordered a set of 285/75-R16's to go on my 2002 Wheels I just bought. I was told by a few people that I could have gone with 305's with a little bumper shaving. I would suspect you will be fine with your ideas.

The springs you speak of, am I correct in assuming you are talking about F550 springs? If so, what do you gain from them on the Excursion?

You can run 305/70-16s with no bumper shaving. I did it for months.

I don't know of any 305/75-16s for sale.

Re: Same ole' subject---BIGGER TIRES

Yes, you are correct---the springs are F450/550---and there is a lot of reading for you to do on that subject---many threads have been written on it---
what you'll learn about your new Excursion is that it's a great vehicle, except for the suspension, and the main culprit seems to be the springs, which F**D seems to have chosen to make the Ex a station wagon, instead of the truck that it is. If you get under the truck, you'll see the distance between the fronts springs, and the bump stop, is less than an inch, and thus you'll find yourself porpoising all over the highway. I did that for 30,000 miles, until I changed the springs, and I now love my truck. You'll also want to think about new shocks, as the OEM shocks are rediculous---and a steering stablizer, and a rear anti-sway bar.
I know this sounds like a lot to do, but ask others, and I think you'll find an overwhelming amount of the members here will agree!!!!
Good luck w/your new Ex.

Re: Same ole' subject---BIGGER TIRES

Thanks for the info. I have endured the bumps for about 40k miles now. I suppose the springs will give me a lift a bit as well? I will research it as I am most interested. Can you tell me what the total project cost you (springs, shocks, labor)?

Thanks!

Re: Same ole' subject---BIGGER TIRES

let's see---I'm dealing from memory---the shocks were about $260 (Bilsteins), from Shox.com. The springs were about $240, plus installation, which was $85. I cannot remember what I paid for the steering stablizer (dual Fabtech), or the Hellwig antisway bar---
You'll need those items, regardless of the cost!!!!

Re: Same ole' subject---BIGGER TIRES

The $$ was for the set---I got them at Mid Tenn Ford, in Nashville, TN....I just asked for the jobbers price, and they gave it to me. It's a truck only dealership. I don't think they'll want to ship them to you....it's a pain to pack. I'm sure you cna get a price like that locally!!!! I've seen posts where some people paid a few bucks less than that----make sure they're X springs (rating). Search around here, and you'll find the part ##....just do a search on the Excursion forum, for 450, or 550 springs....there's lots to read.
