Seat Heater's in Ford SD's/Excursion

It's getting cold enough to finally give the seat heaters a test in the new truck. We're very disappointed in the crude, archaic system in our 03 Ex Lmtd. Maybe it wouldn't seem so bad if we didn't know better but the sytems in our last 3 GM trucks ('burb, HD2500, escalade) all put the ford system to shame. They all offered hi and low settings and stayed on as long as you wanted them to, not what some ford engineer thinks is long enough and the switches on the newer trucks are up on the door where you can see them.

So I'm looking for alternatives. I see some on rostra.com for $130 which look okay but I'm wondering about a couple of things. First, is there anyway to improve the current system. It'd probabaly need a resistor cut down the power/heat level a little and some way for the system to stay on until told to turn off.

Second, is there some other aftermarket company that I should look at along with Rostra?

It's a fairly important function up here in MN. It bother's the wife a lot more than me so it bothers me a lot, if you get what I mean. If she ain't happy, I ain't happy.

Re: Seat Heater's in Ford SD's/Excursion

jejb,

First off, thanks to CHPMustang for the plug.

Next, check with Rostra as I believe that is a per-seat price. Our kits come complete and are easy to install however, you might want to search this site to see if your system can be modified to work like it 'should'. As far as I can remember, some of the issues you are facing cannot be changed.

Good luck and call if we can help. JS.

Re: Seat Heater's in Ford SD's/Excursion

Anybody know of a way to make the stock seat heaters adjustable in the amount of heat they put out? Presently they are either off (too cold) or on (too hot too quick). My 10 year old Saab has 3 different heat levels you can turn on. 1=too cold, 2=just right, and 3=too hot. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks for your input.

Re: Seat Heater's in Ford SD's/Excursion

maybe you could install a variable resistor(?) inline to reduce the voltage to the seat pad
