Serious 4 wheeling questions??

I've got a 2000 excursion 4wd and am looking for a lift and tire combo that would suit the way I use my X. Weekdays it's on the highway and weekends it's offroad. So far it is stock with 285's and 4wheeling I've damaged both running boards and drag the hitch / rr bumper a lot. I am looking at the fabtech 5.5" performance system with 315's and an 8" wide wheel. Would like to have input from users that actually 4wheel their vehicles and would like to see pics of there lift/tire combos in action (articulation or small clearance conditions).

Re: Serious 4 wheeling questions??

Welcome to the board!

I take mine off road, but I wouldn't say I "wheel" it. It's much too big for my tastes. I save the jeep for that type of thing. I'm real curious as to the types of responses you get.

Have a good one,
Dave

Re: Serious 4 wheeling questions??

Yeah I know it's a little to big to go rock crawling with, but my wife likes to go camping and I have three kids so it gets the job done. Most of the the 4 wheeling is just getting to that perfect camping spot. And with the third row removed the air matress fits in nicely.

Re: Serious 4 wheeling questions??

I've had my X out to the Hollister Hills on some pretty gnarly trails, and up Five Fingers as well. I figured it would be cheaper to repair or replace the running boards when it was time to sell than spend all that money only to have a higher and less stable vehicle. I sold it last fall, and the folks didn't even care about the damage.

Re: Serious 4 wheeling questions??

Check out 4wheelparts.com for pretty good deals on Pro Comp lift/tire/wheel packages. I bought one of their packages for my jeep and was very satisfied and it come complete with everything including transfer case drop hardware.

If you don't have one, better order a tranfer case shield too!!

Keep in mind all the lines that run back to your rear a/c and heater go right under the rear of the front passenger side wheel well. If you drop off a ledge and crush those lines it will cost some big bucks to replace those lines!!!

Have fun out there and remember, The farther you hike away from your vehicle, the bigger knife you need. TR

Yup, 3 kids and 2 dogs of my own so I understand perfectly. That's the kind of wheeling we do with ours also. For the tight spots with the "natural pinstriping" I take the jeep.

I have only had the third row seat in mine for maybe 3 weeks since we bought it. Christmas, Thanksgiving, and Easter.

Have a good one,
