Shopping for a X with a 7.3. Any advice?

Hey everybody, Mife wife totaled our 1996 sub with a 6.5 diesel that was pretty modified. I have a 99 f350 with a 7.3 and 6 speed and I really like the PSD. So what is the story with the excursions? Do the transmissions go out between 100-120k? What rear end ratios in the axle? Do they really get 17-20MPG at highway speeds? Any good years vs bad years on the excursions? I alreday know that I dont want a 6.0, what about the best years of the 7.3? Has anyone been a serious crash with one of these? How did it hold up? My friends 4x4 excursion had a very rough ride compared to my 4x4 sub (IFS vs solid axle), and my 350 is unbearable for long distance rides without a full load, what can be done about the excursions 4x4 rough ride? Do the excursions turn any tighter than the crewcabs? I hate trying to park the truck, but fortunatley I do like long walks at the shopping centers!! Thanks for any and all advice.

Re: Shopping for a X with a 7.3. Any advice?

Start reading this forum. It took me a year to find 03, bought it in May 05. I Get 17-18 at 75 mph. You can get 20 mpg at 60-65 mph in warmer weather. Sure ride is firmer, you will need spring upgrade. Some O1 had problems with trans. Should have tighter turning circle, 137 inch wheelbase.

[ QUOTE ]
Do the transmissions go out between 100-120k?

[/ QUOTE ] Sometimes but with proper maintenance and usage they will last as long as any other trans out there.
[ QUOTE ]
What rear end ratios in the axle?

[/ QUOTE ] 3.73
[ QUOTE ]
Do they really get 17-20MPG at highway speeds?

[/ QUOTE ] Yes
[ QUOTE ]
I alreday know that I dont want a 6.0,

[/ QUOTE ] Smart thinking.
[ QUOTE ]
what about the best years of the 7.3?

[/ QUOTE ] In my opinion the 2000 is the best year to mod as it has forged connecting rods in the engine. All of the years with 7.3 got more fancy as time went by and are good if you keep the engine mods within reason.
[ QUOTE ]
Has anyone been a serious crash with one of these?

[/ QUOTE ] My self personally no but I have seen a few that did and they held up real good. Like anything else it all depends on what you hit or get hit by.
[ QUOTE ]
My friends 4x4 excursion had a very rough ride compared to my 4x4 sub (IFS vs solid axle), and my 350 is unbearable for long distance rides without a full load, what can be done about the excursions 4x4 rough ride?

[/ QUOTE ] The Excursioins with the stock suspension in my opinion ride like junk. Do the V B spring swap with some good adjustable shocks and they ride a lot better. Plenty of posts to search on this concern in this forum so I won't get into it now.
[ QUOTE ]
Do the excursions turn any tighter than the crew cabs? I hate trying to park the truck, but fortunatley I do like long walks at the shopping centers!!

[/ QUOTE ] Yes they turn tighter than a crew cab but it's still like parking the Queen Mary at times.

Re: Shopping for a X with a 7.3. Any advice?

Thanks for the reply. I went and looked at a 2000 limited today that had 109k 2wd. First thing I did is open the engine compartment and I didnt like what I saw. You can really tell when a owner has not taken care of his motor. OIl leaks everywhere, Oil leaks from turbo hoses, hose camps missing etc etc. If anybody finds a decent one in San Diego, please let me know.

Re: Shopping for a X with a 7.3. Any advice?

I have an 03, I feel it is the best year because it is the end of the run for the 7.3 so every update, fix, improvement has been made, in fact I think it was 03 that they even gave it the same power as the PU 7.3. There was a difference for a few years I understand. I have had -0- problems in 147,000 miles. It has never missed a beat. Oh, I forgot, the alternator went at 130,000 or so. This truck travels 800 miles a weekend, always towing for 6 hours one way. Sometimes small loads, sometime huge loads. I have a mild edge programmer for 60/90 hp/tq, it helps pull the hills with a trailer. I have had no elec problems except for one an installer caused. The reverse sensors are a joke, mine work when they want but I don't trust them, I just keep my receiver in and it gives me a nice safety zone. So I say 03, take a look at mine, it has a 3" lift ans 315/70/17s Just enough to make it look different but not too wacked to drive every day...although I do want 4"s..... You can find an 03 out there but it is slim. I would sell mine for $32,000 if you want one.

I have an 03 as well, and the only thing thus far was an alt as well.I wouldnt worry greatly about the oily turbo hoses. When I got mine it was the same way, even after I cleaned it up it did it again.I believe once you do the CCV mod it gets rid of the mess.Good luck on your search.Oh and yes mine does get about 21 on the highway.

Re: Shopping for a X with a 7.3. Any advice?

There are 03' Exes out there, you should have bought this one on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...ayphotohosting

I think it went at a fair price, which is good because I bought it. I was looking at only 03's with the 7.3, 4x4, bench rear seat and preferred the limited. I compromised on the color. I would have rather had white. I missed out on an Eddie Bauer 03 meeting my criteria with only 24k miles by an hour and a half a week before.

Now I get to read all of the suspension threads.

If you want a better ride and mileage stick with the 2wd.

Re: Shopping for a X with a 7.3. Any advice?

I have a 00 2WD Limited PSD with 70,000 and some mods, I just bought an 02, 2WD limited PSD with what looks like the Ultra upgrade. Same color and it had 30,000. It loks inside and out like a new car. I bought it in Texas and drove it back to CA. No problems at all so far. Now I'm putting some of the same mods on it as I have on the other one. One will become a backup.
I'm very happy with it.

BTW, I found it on eBay, Texas Auto Direct is the dealer. They were very straightforward to work with.

Re: Shopping for a X with a 7.3. Any advice?

Im thinking about selling my x. I have a '00 w 118k miles on it. has the '05 front clip on it and it is the limited model and is a 4x4. interior is great except for driver seat which is showing some signs of wear. has 4 inch banks exhaust and diy intake. gets 18 on the hwy at 70 and about 16 around town. i dont want to let it go but i really need a truck. ill let it go for 20k.

Re: Shopping for a X with a 7.3. Any advice?

Picked up a 2002 X ltd 4X4 a few months ago. Only my 2nd Ford ever. I too had and still have a suburban 6.5td 2wd. The X is not the car ride, steering or as quiet as the Sub. But the 4wd and the PSD seems so far very good. The sub I have has a chip and some mild mods mainly for towing in AZ. The same mods I am doing to the X, mild performance mods: edge with attitude, flowmaster, grooved rotors, Airaid airdam, Hellwig rear sway bar and Bilsteins, Mag-hytec hi capacity trans pan. I want reliabilty and good towing performance running the AZ mtns in the heat. The 2002 was as I understand, first year to up the HP to 250hp, power pedals, and I have rear sensors I think were standard. I feel I got a fair deal at $19K at 113K miles and all AZ truck. Just keep looking and follow ebay and truck trader. The power pedals and rear sensors were a requirement for the short wife. Plus the tow side mirrors. Good luck.

Re: Shopping for a X with a 7.3. Any advice?

I got into a PSD Excursion because of losing our '99 3/4 ton 6.5 TD Sub and not being able to find a low-mileage replacement.

If you would like to give me a call, I can save you a huge amount of aggravation that can result if you end up making the wrong choice for yourself. There are major differences and tradeoffs. For many people who have had Subs, an Ex will never really work for them. My Ex is OK for me, but I'm saving up for a Duramax Suburban (conversion).

Best Wishes,

Re: Shopping for a X with a 7.3. Any advice?

My wife daily drives the X, it's got 174K miles. Besides the normal stuff it's been trouble free.

Alternator, glow plugs, two cps's (114K,124K) at 134K I was ready to install one but so far so good!

We've seen 19 mpg a few times and once got 19.8 on a tank.
