Should I do an upgrade from 2000 to 2003

I own a 2000 Excursion Limited with a 7.3 Powerstroke. I have a chance to upgrade to a 2003 Limited with the same 7.3 Powerstroke. Should I wait to do the 6.0 or not? I have 77,000 miles on my 2000. When is the best time to to get rid of my "baby"? I wouldn't want to get in a situation that she's not worth much on a trade in

Thanks all,

Jake

Re: Should I do an upgrade from 2000 to 2003

When I bought my 2003 X I had the opportunity to buy a 2003 7.3 same color and options. I did not, and am I ever glad.

Re: Should I do an upgrade from 2000 to 2003

I'm just a peasant boy looking for some advice. I would not want to make this into debate about the two engines. Sorry if I did. I have been here at this forum for a couple years and always took this site like gospel(sp?). Maybe I asked the wrong questions. How does the 2000 X's 7.3 compare to the 2003 7.3 and should I consider the 6.0...
I'm mostly wondering about when my 2000 will decline in price. I'm sorry if I caused any problems.

Re: Should I do an upgrade from 2000 to 2003

First of all the 2000 7.3 is really stronger than the 2003 7.3. In 2002 IH switched from forged rods to powerder coated which is what's in the 6.0 Powerstroke. The 03's have the better looking headlights, better cup holders, different engine coolant, and a tranny temp gauge, plus more things I can't think of now.

I would think your 2000 Excursion has already done most of the depreciation it will do for a while. In the first couple years the Excursion's are supposed to depreciate by 55%, ouch! If your rig has only 77,000 miles it's just broke in!!!

I have read all about powdered versus forged rods, but what I haven't read are stories about people blowing their powdered rods. Forged rods may be stronger, but powdered seem to be doing just fine. OK. If you want to run 1000 hp, nitro, propane etc., go to forged rods.

I posted this over in the 7.3 forum, but my '03 runs much stronger than my early '99. Later PSD's have a bigger HPOP, turbo and injectors. There were also on-going improvements to the 4R100 (see Brian's website for pics of the parts). I'm not sure when all of these changes kicked in. You might already have most of them on an '00.

For me, 6.0 versus 7.3 was not about an engine choice, it was about money. I've got a 7.3 in the barn and about $3000-$4000 in my pocket, so that makes me happy with my 7.3 choice.

If you want to get some pop for your money, you'll have to go to the 6.0. I doubt that an '03 7.3 will run/feel that much different from your '00.

You might have some trouble finding an '03 7.3. They probably only made 3000-4000 before the switch over to the 6.0.

Sorry if I offend anyone, but there is no way I'd buy a used '03 6.0.

Hmmmm...so does it mean I've barely unwrapped the celophane on mine? My 2000 X PSD has about 35,000 on it currently (and yes, it is driven every day).

I'm in the market for a low mileage Ex. Lemme know if those come up for sale.

Y2K, 155,000 miles, mine's broken in. I'd also be interested in a used Y2K EX for my son. The miles would not be a concern as long as it is well cared for and was properly maintained. Dale

Re: Should I do an upgrade from 2000 to 2003

You guys with the 2000 Powerstroke Excursion that are still in full factory warranty should be ashamed of yourself's!!! Seriously, those trucks are still like brand new I bet. At least they still have some good resale value anyways.

Most people who buy and run diesel rigs usually rack up the miles off setting the extra $ for the diesel upgrade. Lot's of people agree that any truck that gets over 40,000 miles per year would benefit from a diesel. A diesel vehicle getting 5 mpg or more than a gasser is reason enough to buy the diesel.

Seen a diesl Excusion on autotrader with 190K and they still wanted $18K for it.

True, most guys with the powder coated rods will never see a problem with durablity but the forged are a little stronger. Actually, can only recall a couple people with bent/broken rods on 2002 up Powerstrokes on the net and they were running big hp.
