Re: Sierra Club: Excursion is 21st-century version of the Edsel
this is exact ally why I got my X, I was in LA, Venice Beach a few months ago, and saw all the bleeding-heart do-gooders on the walk way spouting posters of how horrible suv's are and so dangerous to us! It was at that moment I decided to get an X and lift it and drive it over them!
Re: Sierra Club: Excursion is 21st-century version of the Edsel
A show on Showtime sent a reporter to one of the environmental rallies with a petition she was supposed to get signed by as many people as she could. The petition was to ban Dihydrogen Monoxide. She told each person that dihydrogen monoxide, while generally found in nature in small quantity can cause problems in high quantities. She said that it is the universal solvent, can get into baby food, can kill plants and trees in high quantities and will cause vomiting and loose bowels if humans ingest too much. With in a few hours she had a ton of signatures from the environmental activists. The purpose was to show that most environmentalists are not properly informed and are not reacting to something they actually understand but reacting to what they had been told by others. So would you sign the petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide? I hope not since dihydrogen (H2) monoxide (O) is actually the fancy name for water... Never listen to an environmentalist...

Well... all the survey is really showing is that most people are too stupid to think for themselves. There are stupid people who are environmentalists and there are stupid people who own Excursions.
Said in a less inflamitory way, there are people who are environmentalists for the wrong reasons and there are people who buy excursions for the wrong reasons.
One real complaint I have with the simplistic message of environmentalists (which, in their defence ... has to be simplistic because nobody would listen to real reasoned debate (take US politics, for instance)) is the oversimplification of "don't drive an SUV." It's not "evauluate your real needs and environmental impact in satisfying thoses needs." It's not even "compare your total impact to others." It's a simplistic "don't do this" and "do this" without consideration of the people involved.

I personaly have no use for tree huggers, although they are good targets while hunting in the woods. They are running business out of Ca.

I guess if everyone only had two people in their family and simply wanted transporation back and forth to work the hybrids are probably a good choice.
I really get tired of seeing articles published just because some moron at the Sierra Club had something to say about any SUV.
All one has to do is review the latest auto issue from Consumer Reports this year and look at the "real' gas mileage they achieved with most of the cars and SUV's. It's fun reading when you see that people buying those small and mid size gas jobs are getting the same milage we are with the massive diesel Excursion.
We have more interior room, a lot more towing capacity, sit up nice and high on the road and drive a very perky diesel engine to boot. Diesel fuel prices in this area are about .20 a gallon cheaper that gas.
Parking is a little more cumbersome but easily adapted to.
All in all I've very happy with my truck.

It's actualy not a CC shorty either. It's a supercab shorty. A CC Shorty is about 18" longer I believe. I was digging into the size big time, trying to find a way to make a CC shorty fit in my garage. The wife and garage won and I have an Excursion. But I'm not complaining. Actually my only complaint is that UPS is not getting here fast enough this morning with my SC 1704!! WHOOO HOOO, just as I finished typing that, UPS pulled up!!!!!

Well... this is another example of a simple one dimensional analysis. Hybrid vehicles are useful for one thing only: stop and go traffic. Regenerative breaking only pays its way when you stop frequently.
And... recent articles all over the news state that rescue workers are really worried about getting someone out of a car that might have live (from the batteries) 500VDC power. The apparent solution is that they will only cut in from the roof (no cutting in other areas).
As I detailed in another thread, many compact SUVs and cars have worse rollover data and worse milage than the Excursion. In general, I therorize that you can't make a practical vehicle with good rollover stats that gets more than 30mpg. Reason? It has to be _wide_.

The Ford F250/350 pickups are 137" wb for the standard cab 8' box,142" shortbox SC, 154" shortbox CC,158" 8' box SC and 172" wb for the 8' box cc. So the Excursion is on the shortest of the five wb's.

Makes sense if you think about it. You have 8'6" of cargo room with all seats folded... so it would most resemble a regular cab with an 8" box in that configuration.
